As a new student at Lambton College, the college environment can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. Below we have created a checklist that includes a number of ways you can keep on track and be as successful as possible:
- CREATE A SUPPORT SYSTEM
- Discuss your commitment to school with friends and family. Predict problems that may come up like finding childcare or planning for a sick day.
- FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE COLLEGE
- There are plenty of ways to learn more about your surroundings at Lambton College. Whether you’re a prospective or current student you can contact us to book a tour or to attend one of our events like College Night or Open House. Contact us today at 519-541-2403 or at info@lambton.on.ca.
- SIGN-UP FOR A PEER MENTOR
- Peer mentors are senior level students who have experience with the way the College works. Contact your Aboriginal Support Team if you are interested in meeting a peer mentor.
- SET GOALS
- Both short and long-term goals are important in order to get you through your College career. Treat school like it were your full-time job!
- LEARN TO BE ORGANIZED
- Being organized can save you a lot of headaches when you are juggling a number of competing priorities. Make sure you always refer to your Course Outlines, use a planner to keep track of when assignments are due, attend classes, and try to attend a time management workshop. Using all of these tools will help you stay organized and on top of things.
- MAKE HOMEWORK A PRIORITY
- Create a study area that is free of distractions and make sure this is an area where your papers will be safe.
- STAY INFORMED
- Make sure you are aware of what is happening in your classes. Stay in touch with your teachers by checking you College e-mail account and LION. Also, regularly visit the college website and webadvisor.
- DEVELOP RELATIONSHIPS
- Be aware of when your teachers offer office hours and know how to contact them in case you need to let them know you won’t be in class. It is also helpful to organize study groups with your classmates.
- SIGN-UP FOR A PEER/TEACHER TUTOR
- FREE tutoring services are available at the Learning Bridge in room M104.
- ATTEND SELF-HELP WORKSHOPS
- The college offers a number of self-help workshops you can take advantage of such as, stress management, budgeting, personal learning styles and more! Check your college e-mail to learn more about when these workshops are offered.
- ATTEND ACADEMIC WORKSHOPS
- Academic workshops are also available throughout the year and they cover a variety of topics such as, effective note-taking, study skills, exam and test preparation, library resources and more.
- STAY FINANCIALLY SECURE
- There are number of outlets for students to make extra money during the school year. Make sure you visit the financial aid office and ask about bursaries, scholarships, awards, and on-campus employment (Work Study and EBAT).
- GET INVOLVED
- Keep your stress levels in check by maintaining a balance between school and social life. There are a number of on-campus events organized by the Student Council throughout the year. You can also attend guest speaker events on-campus and become involved with a local organization or join an intramural or varsity sports team.
- STAY POSITIVE
- Remain positive by looking after your personal well-being. Also, remember to eat healthy and get enough sleep.
- ASK FOR HELP
