This Board of Governors Certificate program prepares students for the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI) certification. The program gives students clear direction on what to look for during an inspection, such as: signs of non-performance due to old age, deferred maintenance, weather damage, and poor workmanship. Course curriculum describes the materials used in the construction of each house system, how they are assembled, what may go wrong and causes and implications of problems that result.

The systems and components of a house include roofing, structure, electrical, heating, air conditioning/heat pumps, plumbing, exterior, insulation and the interior. The 10 credit courses in this certificate have been organized to address each of these, and provide students with communications skills and knowledge of professional practice required to be successful in this growing industry. Emphasis is placed on practical knowledge of the performance of the systems and components of a house, not on theory.

O.S.S.D. or equivalent

Home inspection became part of the real estate scene in the mid 1970's. Consumer demand for it has grown steadily since then. There are currently about 25,000 home inspectors in North America. Approximately 75% of the 5-million resale homes in North America are inspected. There is considerable room for growth in this profession as opportunities exist in the real estate and insurance areas. OAHI certification establishes a high standard for qualified home inspectors. It is anticipated that mandatory certification of home inspectors will be in place within the next 2-3 years. This mandatory certification has been established in the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta.
