This program is a transition year for secondary school graduates and mature students who lack the prerequisites to be accepted into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree offered jointly by Lambton College and University of Windsor.

In order to be considered for the BScN program, students are required to attain: program grade point average of at least 2.7; a combined average of at least a B- (70%) in BIO-1205 and BIO-2205, and a combined average of at least a B- (70%) in CHM-1255 and CHM-2255; passing grade in all courses in both semesters.

Students in this program must apply to the BScN program by February 1 of the calendar year in which they wish to start the program to ensure that all additional requirements are met as outlined in the calendar for the BScN program.

For students not entering the Bachelor of Science - Nursing (BSCN) program from high school, but rather enter through the Pre-Health Sciences - BSCN (PNSG) programs, only Lambton College and St.Clair College programs will be guaranteed consideration.

O.S.S.D. or equivalent with:
Grade 12 English C or U (minimum grade of 55%)
Grade 11 or Grade 12 Chemistry C or U OR Grade 11 or 12 Biology C or U
Grade 12 Mathematics C or U (recommended)

Course equivalencies can be obtained through Academic Upgrading.

Q. I enrolled in Pre-Health. Is this the right program to get into nursing?
A. Lambton College has two programs called Pre-Health Sciences. One is Pre-Health Sciences. The other is Pre-Health Sciences BScN. To get into the collaborative BScN nursing program, you want the second “Pre-Health Sciences”. Generally, at the college, we call this program “Pre-Nursing”.

Q. Do I have to go into Pre-Health Sciences BScN to get into the BScN nursing program at Lambton College?
A. No. If you have the right high school pre-requisites, you can apply to get directly into the BScN nursing program. You need an OSSD with a 72% overall average in six 4U, 4M, or OAC courses. And you need a grade of at least 70% in grade 12 biology (U) and chemistry (U). If you do not have the proper background, the Pre-Nursing program is one way to go.

Q. What do we do in the Pre-Nursing program?
A. You get a solid science background in chemistry and biology. That includes classroom time and labs. You get some mathematics and some English.

Q. If I have some of the pre-requisites for the BScN program but need some others, can I just take part of the Pre-Nursing program?
A. No. The Pre-Nursing program is one complete package. You must enroll in the complete program.

Q. What are the grade requirements in the Pre-Nursing program?
A. You need to get a B- or better in each chemistry and biology course. You need to get a 2.7 overall GPA (grade point average). And you should not fail any course.

Q. Is the Pre-Nursing program difficult?
A. It is a demanding program. There are a lot of class hours. Each course demands homework time.

Q. I am having trouble in one of my Pre-Nursing courses. What should I do?
A. Talk to the teacher. Explain your situation and ask for help in the course. Go to the teacher as much as you need to in order to keep up. Organize your fellow students into a study group. You will find many helpful people in your classes. Hang in there! Topics change, so one that you find difficult will likely change to another that you may find easier. Do the homework! Review class notes each day! Attend every class!

Q. Is tutoring available at Lambton College?
A. Yes. Free tutoring is available through the Learning Bridge in room M104. Talk to Connie Byrns, and she can set you up with a tutor.

Q. Is any other help available?
A. You could talk to a teacher or the coordinator in the Pre-Nursing program. You could talk to a counselor. You may also wish to talk to students already in the BScN program.

Q. I am not getting the 70% or better grades that I need. What are my options?
A. Complete the Pre-Nursing program and then come back to Lambton College to complete the courses in which you did not do well. You could also look into substitute online courses. Talk to a counselor, the Pre-Nursing coordinator, or one of your teachers for ideas. You could also switch into another health-related program (see below).

Q. If I get a 65% in my chemistry or biology course, did I fail?
A. No. You need to get below 50% to fail any course. Once you get your transcript, you will see that you have a credit in this course. However, in terms of the Pre-Nursing program, you have not met the standards to get into the BScN program in this course.

Q. If I decide to switch programs, do my Pre-Nursing program courses count for anything?
A. Definitely! Check with the counselors or the program coordinators to make sure. But the courses in the Pre-Nursing program are basic to many technology, health and science-related programs.

Q. What are other health program possibilities?
A. Lambton College offers Practical Nursing, Paramedic Technician, Pharmacy, and Massage Therapy. Fanshawe College and St. Clair College offer various programs related to health occupations.

Q. I know that St. Clair College offers the same sort of Pre-Nursing program to get into the collaborative BScN program at the University of Windsor. What are the advantages of going to Lambton College?
A. Lambton College is a smaller place. Class sizes are smaller and you are in a smaller town. Also, you get more lab time in the sciences at Lambton College.

Q. Once I am in the Pre-Nursing program at Lambton College, do I need to apply again to get into the BScN program?
A. Yes. Fill out an application through OCAS. See the web site www.ontariocolleges.ca.

Q. Once I finish the Pre-Nursing program at Lambton College, can I go to another university, like McMaster or Western for their BScN nursing program?
A. Try! Our Pre-Health Sciences (BScN) program has been set up in collaboration with the University of Windsor. Other colleges running their pre-nursing programs have set up their own agreements with their partner universities. Applying to another university besides the University of Windsor is uncharted territory, but it does not hurt to try.

Q. Once I complete the Pre-Nursing program at Lambton College, is there a waiting list to get into the BScN nursing program?
A. Check with the pre-nursing coordinator, BScN nursing coordinator, or dean. As of 2006, there is not.

Q. I am in the Pre-Nursing program’s first semester. When do I apply to get into the BScN program?
A. We recommend that you apply in mid-October; it is best to check all deadline application dates. Choose BScN Lambton College, BScN St. Clair College (Windsor) and then any other programs (or no other) you wish.

Q. Are there course changes for second semester?
A. Yes! This is unusual for our pre-nursing program, but we have made ANT 2003 (the anthropology course) an elective. The electives to choose from are ANT 2003, PED 1023 (physical education), POL 1003 (political science), and HIS 2003 (history). If you wish to take the Medical Anthropology elective course in the BScN program, make sure you choose ANT 2003.

While the physical demands of the classroom theory courses are not demanding, students enrolled will not be permitted to remain in courses where specific skill requirements prevent successful completion, i.e. severely restricted eyesight in a chemistry lab. Nursing is a very vigorous program from a skill demand point of view.

Some students with disabilities may require academic accommodation to equalize opportunities to meet academic demands of a course or program.

There are currently no transfer agreements for this program.

General Awards

Lucia Mrowiec English Award – Awarded to the student with the highest marks in two of ENG 111, ENG 211, or ENG 311 (ENG 115, ENG 215 if offered). Student must have taken both courses during their previous academic year and must have an overall GPA of at least 3.5. No application is required. Students will be notified by the Awards office if they qualify.
