This program is a transition year for secondary school graduates and mature students who lack the prerequisites or need to improve their math, science, and communication skills before entering a health-related college program.

Graduates of this certificate program are given extra consideration for selection into any over-subscribed health-related program at Lambton College. Please Note: this does not guarantee entrance into any program at Lambton College. Where there is intent to prepare for entry into a health-related program at other colleges, please seek advice from those colleges regarding acceptance of credits from Lambton College.

Pre-Health Frequently Asked Questions

• What is the purpose of the Pre-Health program?

A. The Pre-Health program gives you a one year experience of college, where you can focus on science courses and others and satisfy requirements to get into a health-related post-secondary college program.

Q. I know that Fanshawe College offers a Pre-Health program as well. What are the advantages of going to Lambton College?
A. Lambton College may be closer to home. Lambton also has smaller classes in comparison with other colleges.

Q. There are electives in the Pre-Health program. Should I be careful about which ones I choose?
A. Yes. Think about your plans after completing the Pre-Health program. For example, many health-related post-secondary programs require physics among their pre-requisites. So PHY 1055 would be a good choice if you were intending to go into the Medical Radiation Technology program at Fanshawe College.

Q. What do we do in the Pre-Health program?
A. You get a solid science background in chemistry and biology. That includes classroom time and labs. You will be expected to complete courses in mathematics and English.

Q. If I have some of the pre-requisites for the health-related post-secondary program I want to get into but need some others, can I just take part of the Pre-Health program?
A. Yes. You may be a part-time student in this program in order to fulfill the pre-requisites you need for admission to another program. But that means that you will not graduate from the Pre-Health program and receive a certificate.

Q. What are the grade requirements in the Pre-Health program?
A. To graduate with a certificate from the Pre-Health program, you need to get a 50% or better in each course. However, keep your eyes on the program you will want to enter after Pre-Health. Here is a chart showing the minimum grade requirements for Lambton College’s health-related programs. Note that in mathematics, if you take MTH 1063 and then MTH 2063, you need that minimum grade in each of these courses.

Q. Is the Pre-Health program difficult?
A. Pre-Health is a challenging program. You will spend approximately 16 hours per week in class and 4 hours per week in labs. Each course and lab will require preparation time in the way of homework.

Q. What help is available if I get into difficulty in my courses?

• Talk to the teacher. Explain your situation and ask for help in the course. Go to the teacher as much as you need to in order to keep up.
• Talk to your fellow students. You will find many helpful people in your classes.
• Hang in there! Topics change, so one that you find difficult will likely change to another that you may find easier.
• Do the homework! Review class notes each day! Attend every class!
• Take advantage of the free tutoring available through the Learning Bridge in room M104. Talk to Connie Byrns there and she can set you up with a tutor.
  

Q. Any other help available?
A. You could talk to a teacher or the coordinator in the Pre-Health program. You could talk to a counselor. You may also wish to talk to students already in the health-related program you aim to enter.

Q. If I get a 65% in my chemistry course and I need a 70% to get into the Paramedic program, did I fail?
A. No. You need to get below 50% to fail any course. Once you get your transcript, you will see that you have a credit in this course. However, you have not met the admission standard to get into the Paramedic program.

Q. I decided that I want to enter a technology program after this pre-health year instead of going into a health-related program. Do I have to take pre-technology next year?
A. No. The courses you need for technology-related programs are almost the same as for health-related programs. In fact, the pre-technology program and the pre-health program are very similar. Check the technology program admission requirements and talk to a counselor.

Q. What are health program possibilities?
A. Lambton College offers Practical Nursing, Paramedic, Pharmacy Technician, Massage Therapy, and Pre-Nursing. Fanshawe College offers Medical Radiation Technology. St. Clair College offers Medical Lab Technician.

Q. Once I am in the Pre-Health program at Lambton College, do I need to apply again to get into one of Lambton’s health programs, like Massage Therapy?
A. Yes. Fill out an OCAS application. See the web site www.ontariocolleges.ca.

Q. I am in the Pre-Health program’s first semester. When do I apply to get into the program that I want to get into in the following September?
A. We recommend that you apply in early November. It is best to check all deadline application dates.

Q. Is there special consideration for students completing the Pre-Health program at Lambton College?
A. Yes! Completing this program shows a maturity and commitment that we look for in students. Completing this program (with the required grades) puts you at the front of the line for being admitted into our health-related programs.

Q. Once I finish the Pre-Health program at Lambton College, can I go to another college, like Fanshawe or St. Clair?
A. Yes. Make sure you contact the other college as soon as possible – preferably before you begin Pre-Health at Lambton College – regarding acceptance of credits.

Q. Once I complete the Pre-Health program at Lambton College, is there a waiting list to get into the health related programs at Lambton?
A. Check with the registrar’s office.

Q. The Pre-Health program at Lambton is a whole year. I cannot start school until January. Are there Pre-Health courses offered then that function as pre-requisite courses to get into a health-related post-secondary program?
A. Yes. We offer chemistry, biology, mathematics, and physics courses that function as those pre-requisites. The courses are ENG 1055, CHM 1005, BIO 1005, MTH 1055, and PHY 1055. By taking these courses, you will fulfill the pre-requisites for admission to our technology programs, but you will not be a graduate of the Pre-Health program and receive a certificate.

While the physical demands of the classroom theory courses are not demanding, students enrolled will not be permitted to remain in courses where specific skill requirements prevent successful completion (e.g. severely restricted eyesight in a Chemistry Lab). Students must read and abide by course prerequisites and skills requirements under the program description from where the course is taken.

Some students with disabilities may require academic accommodation to equalize opportunities to meet academic demands of a course or program.

There are currently no transfer agreements for this program.

General Awards

Lucia Mrowiec English Award – Awarded to the student with the highest marks in two of ENG 111, ENG 211, or ENG 311 (ENG 115, ENG 215 if offered). Student must have taken both courses during their previous academic year and must have an overall GPA of at least 3.5. No application is required. Students will be notified by the Awards office if they qualify.
