The field of human resources management is increasing in importance as organizations recognize that the effective and efficient management of an organization’s human resources can provide a competitive advantage. The Certified Human Resources Professional (C.H.R.P.) designation is the recognized professional designation in the field of human resource management.

The objectives of the one-year Human Resources Management Graduate certificate program are: 

    - To provide college and university graduates with the skills and knowledge required to obtain positions in the field of human resources management; 
    - To provide individuals working in human resources management an opportunity to expand and update their skills and knowledge; 
    - To provide students with an opportunity to complete the academic requirements of the Human Resources Professionals Association (H.R.P.A.) leading towards the Professional designation.

This program includes courses in human resources management functions including human resources planning, recruiting and selection, training and development, compensation, human resources information systems, health and safety, and labour relations. The program also includes a field placement component in which students will be able to apply human resources management concepts and obtain experience. Courses in this program prepare students to write the national knowledge exam required to obtain the Certified Human Resources Professional (C.H.R.P.) designation.

Graduates of the program will be prepared for positions as recruiters, compensation analysts, pension and benefits assistants, health and safety assistants, employment equity officers, training and development assistants, labour relations assistants and other entry-level positions in human resources management.

What certification will you get upon completion of this course?

Students graduate with an Ontario College Graduate Certificate. The program also contains the courses required to obtain the Certified Human Recourses Professional (CHRP) designation. To obtain the designation students will write an exam administered by the Ontario Human Resource Professionals Association

How many hours of home study are expected per week?

This will vary; however, a guide is one hour of home study for each hour of class.

What resources are available if you require additional help while in training?

Students can access free tutoring, the centre for students with disabilities, the counselling department for academic and personal counselling, an on-campus doctor or nurse and the financial aid office.

 What percentage of students who are enrolled in this program successfully complete it?

 What academic counselling is available prior to starting school and during the training period?

Prior to starting school students can access academic counselling and after they have become full-time students they can also access personal counselling in addition to academic.

Instructors have relevant work experience and in many cases hold a Masters Degree.

Yes, students are able to audit classes. A shadow day can be arranged by contacting the college?s Information Office at 519-541-2403.

Will there be a practicum or work placement? When and for how long? Is it a paid or unpaid placement? 

There is an optional four week internship at the end of the program that is unpaid.

Continuing Education is available through the Ontario HRPA. The association provides seminars, legal updates, etc.

We offer Career Placement services through our Student Success area. These services are available to graduates for up to six months after graduation.

The CHRP designation referred to above is becoming an important qualification for jobs above entry level in the industry.

Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) designation

Upon graduation, students can choose to take the National Knowledge Exam (N.K.E.) and practical practice exams in order to obtain their Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) designation. To be eligible to write the N.K.E. candidates must have an overall average in the nine required courses of 70% and no individual course mark of less than 65%. These nine courses are part of Lambton’s Human Resources Management Program course list and include:

Please Note: A university degree will be required to obtain the CHRP designation after 2010. Students who do not have a degree should plan on completing the required courses and writing the National Knowledge Exam no later than the fall of 2010.
