This program combines theory and hands-on applications to provide the graduating technologist with the necessary job skills to perform entry-level duties in a variety of fire protection fields. The program is designed to accept graduates of the Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training program as direct entrants into the second year (Term 4). Students will utilize the resources of the College’s extensive Fire and Emergency Response Training Centre’s training grounds to develop and maintain skills in Fire Suppression, Fire Protection and Hazardous Materials Response. The Fire and Emergency Response Training Centre is located nine kilometers from the main campus. Students are required to arrange their own transportation.

Successful graduation from a Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training Program

Typical positions that may be available to the graduating technologist may include: municipal fire departments in the fields of fire suppression and fire prevention; industrial manufacturing in the areas of fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency equipment sales, fire protection system maintenance and insurance company loss prevention specialists.

This program is not eligible for Second Career or other programs under the Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities (MTCU) - Employment & Training Division.

• Applicants must be able to lift a bulk mass of 18kg (40 lbs), and have the ability to dismantle and assemble large pieces of equipment.
• A satisfactory level of both fine and gross motor control is required.
• Students will be required to climb vertical ladders and walk on platforms with open gratings.
• Students will not be allowed to wear contact lenses or glasses when wearing breathing apparatus.

Male students must be clean-shaven to ensure a good seal with the mask. Although not required for acceptance into the program, students interested in pursuing a career in the municipal fire service should be aware that:

• Visual requirements of 20/30 in each eye, without the use of corrective lenses, and satisfactory completion of a colour vision assessment may be required.
• They should not have been convicted of a criminal offence for which a pardon has not been granted.
• They should be able to communicate in English, both written and oral.
• A medical certificate indicating an ability to perform the duties of a firefighter will be required by the Ontario Fire Marshal.

Co-op Memorial Award – This award is awarded to a student with a GPA over 3.0 who has been exceptionally successful at his/her co-op placement. There is no need to apply - eligible students are selected by the College co-op coordinators.

Gordon Henderson Memorial Award – Students who are eligible for this award must have an excellent GPA as well as a successful co-op experience. Students need not apply, selection is made by the College co-op department.

School & Program Specific Awards

Ontario Industrial Fire Protection Association William Beatty Memorial Award - This award is given to the two students with the highest GPA/course load at the end of the Pre-Service Firefighter program. Students must be returning to the Fire Science program.
