The Alumni Association hosted the 11th annual Driving Education Golf Classic at Sawmill Creek Golf Resort and Spa on Thursday, July 12, 2012. This year the Alumni Association rebranded the tournament with Driving Education to promote and showcase the support the Association offers to scholarships and bursaries for Lambton College students. With a $90,000 endowment fund and annual distribution of additional $5,000, the Alumni Association is driving education forward at Lambton College.
This year the tournament couldn’t have had a more beautiful day, not too hot and ideal golfing weather! Upon arrival, golfers participated in a free golf clinic facilitated by Christopher, one of the new pros at Sawmill Creek. The clinic provided participants with an opportunity to work on their short game in anticipation of the tournament. 78 golfers took part in the tournament enjoying 18 holes with cart and many games along the way including a putting challenge, two Hole in One opportunities, Plinko, Closet to the Keg, a Poker Run and more.
After the round of golf, guests perused the silent auction which featured over 25 items from rounds of golf, tickets to shows, and gift certificates to local business offerings. A gourmet meal of prime rib, potatoes and vegetables was a highlight of the after game festivities.
There were also many winners throughout the night. Congratulations to the Top Team which was presented to WorleyParsons including Eamonn Devine, Bryan Richardson, Grant Lee and Lawrence Carr. The Good Sport Award in honour of a former golf tournament participant, David Tayles, was also awarded to long-time supporter and participant William Hazlitt. William as well as his company Hazlitt, Steeves, Harris LLP has attended and sponsored the event for many years.
The Driving Education Golf Classic raised more than $8000 thanks to the generous support and ongoing participation of both Alumni and friends who attended as individuals or represented local businesses. The money raised goes to support scholarships and bursaries provided by the Lambton College Alumni Association.
The Alumni Association would like to thank our main sponsor, Johnson Insurance Inc., for their annual involvement in this event. Thank you also to 3 Phase Electrical; Architects Tillmann Ruth Robinson; Dresser Rand; Hazlitt, Steeves and Harris LLP; Lakeside Process Controls Ltd.; Selloffvacations; RBC Dominion Securities and Bes Project Consulting for sponsoring holes.
Mark it in your calendar to join us next year for the 12th Annual Driving Education Golf Classic to be held on Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Sawmill Creek Golf Resort and Spa. If you are interested in getting a foursome on an early bird list or getting involved as a sponsor, please contact Laurie Wilde at (519) 542-7751 X3349 for we would love to have you help us drive education!
