SARNIA, September 1, 2016 – Sustainable energy and sustainability initiatives will once again be the focus during Green Energy Doors Open. The annual event, taking place Friday, September 9 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., is a showcase of green energy initiatives hosted by the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association (OSEA).

This free public open house aims to highlight producers and advocates of sustainable energy by giving community members the opportunity to explore and experience green energy initiatives taking place in their area. As the only participant being featured in Sarnia-Lambton, Lambton College will be opening the doors to its green energy research centre: the Lambton Energy Research Centre (LERC).

The LERC works to advance research, development and commercialization of renewable energy-related technologies. The Centre’s Sustainable Smart House serves as an educational facility as well as a testing and evaluation platform for industrial partners pursuing research in renewable energy conversion and storage, energy management, and optimization. The facility also serves as a showcase for many sustainable and green technologies including wind turbine, photovoltaic, geothermal, hydrogen generation, fuel cells, and solar thermal energy.

The LERC has the capabilities to convert wind and solar-derived energy into hydrogen gas, which is then used to regenerate electricity and provide the Smart House with standby power. Other green energy-related projects that take place throughout Lambton College’s campus will also be on display at the Smart House including the work of Industrial Research Chair, Dr. Shahram Karimi.

“With climate change action being a cause of both concern as well as excitement for many people, this initiative by the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association provides a great opportunity to get close to actual projects and to learn from the experiences of those who have spent their time and energy to develop them,” says Nicole Risse, Executive Director, OSEA.

Green Energy Doors Open 2016 takes place across the province and in other parts of the country on Friday, September 9. Interested guests will be able to learn more about Lambton College’s current green energy projects between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
