SARNIA, May 7, 2019 – Applied Research & Innovation at Lambton College continues to shine on the national stage.

On Monday evening, the College was presented with a national award on behalf of Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan), the organization that represents publicly supported colleges, institutes, cegeps and polytechnics in Canada and internationally.

Lambton College was the Gold recipient of Applied Research and Innovation Excellence Award recognizing institutional commitment and the impact of the College’s research activity on small and medium-sized enterprises, the local community, the province, and students enrolled in Lambton College programs.

This is the fifth award in four years by which Lambton College has been recognized for Research & Innovation at this event. The department was previously awarded Gold in 2016, Silver in 2017, and Bronze in 2018. Executive Dean, Mehdi Sheikhzadeh was also presented with a Bronze Award for Leadership Excellence in 2017.

“Applied Research at Lambton College is innovative, visionary, productive and entrepreneurial. Not only have these initiatives provided a successful framework for industry collaboration, but they have also had a major impact on economic development in our community, across the country, and around the globe,” said Judith Morris, President & CEO, Lambton College. “To continue to be recognized nationally for our strengths in this area emphasizes the quality of work being done and most importantly, the opportunities it provides our students who get to work closely with our partners on real-world applied research projects.”

Since 2013, the Applied Research & Innovation department has developed and executed more than 600 projects. These projects have resulted in more than 100 new prototypes, 20 pilot plants and 300 new/improved processes, technologies and services. These initiatives have created more than 150 jobs for researchers and 644 contracts for hiring research students to work on projects in collaboration with partner staff.

According to Research Infosource Inc., which released its annual list of Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges in November, Lambton College is the #1 research college in Canada based on research income.

In the 2018 ranking, which is based on the 2016-2017 fiscal year, Lambton College recorded a total Research Income of $11,397,150 (excluding in-kind contributions).

The College also ranked #1 in Canada for the number of paid research students (students involved in applied research projects that were paid for their work) at a medium-sized college for the third year in a row. In 2016-2017 fiscal year, the College recorded total engagement of 144 paid applied research students for the ranking period, and involved an additional 71 faculty, researcher assistants and technicians across 125 research partnerships over that same timeframe.

The CICan Awards of Excellence were presented during the association’s annual conference in Niagara Falls. The awards were distributed in eight categories, recognizing best practices from institutions across the country.
