Lambton College to Host 2020 OCAA Men’s Basketball Championships

SARNIA, February 6, 2020 – For the first time in the history of the Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA), the Men’s Basketball Championship will be hosted by Lambton College.

In early March, the College will welcome the top eight teams of the 2019/2020 basketball season to their newly constructed Athletics & Fitness Centre (AFC) as they face off to determine who will take home the top prize in the Ontario college circuit.

The three day event, which takes place March 6 through 8, will kick off with the Lambton Lions defending their home court on Friday night at 8 p.m. As the host team, the Lions are granted an automatic bid into the provincial quarterfinal round of the tournament. This will be team's fifth trip to the Ontario Championship in the past six years, as they have won four straight elimination playoff games dating back to 2015.

Basketball legend Leo Rautins, who has been named Honourary Chair of the tournament, will join fans in cheering for the Lions as they #DefendTheDen in their opening game.

“The game of basketball is on the rise across Canada, and Sarnia-Lambton is no exception,” says Rautins, who attended the grand opening of the AFC in October 2018. “With an event of this magnitude coming to the city of Sarnia, it’s a testament to the work that the Lions have put in on the court, and fans are in for an entertaining weekend that will showcase some of the best talent that the province has to offer.”

The tournament will see teams eliminated in a single game knockout format, with the gold medal game scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 8 at 3 p.m.

In addition to hosting the top teams in the OCAA, the weekend event will feature fun for the whole family including concession stand-style food, games for the kids like pop-a-shot, and activities like face painting. Basketball fans will also have the opportunity to purchase Lambton Lions gear throughout the tournament.

“This is a proud moment for Lambton College and we’re excited to have the opportunity to not only showcase our brand new Athletics facility, but also introduce the province to the amazing basketball community we have here in Sarnia,” says Rob Kardas, Vice President, Academic & Student Success, Lambton College.

Kel-Gor Limited, a long-time supporter of Lambton College is the title sponsor of the event, and a variety of ticket options are available including single day passes, and weekend packages, starting at $10 for adults and $5 for children, students, and seniors per game.

“As long-time partners of Lambton College and fans of Lions basketball, Kel-Gor Limited is thrilled to be the Presenting Sponsor of the OCAA Men’s Basketball Championship,” says Matt Gordon, co-owner of Kel-Gor Limited and member of The Lambton College Foundation Board of Directors. “We’re so excited for visiting teams and fans to experience our great community and Lambton College’s world-class facilities. We’re looking forward to some great games.”
