New Lambton College Program Will Support Emerging Industries Such as Cannabis and Natural Health Products

SARNIA, February 13, 2020 – A new program being offered at Lambton College will help train qualified professionals for a variety of emerging industries including cannabis and other natural health products such as ginseng and kombucha.

The newly offered Chemical Laboratory Technology diploma is a three year program with a unique curriculum that will see students acquire basic lab skills and a foundation in lab analysis in the first two years. In year three, students will start to focus on natural health products, including cannabis, as well as other sectors such as reinforced plastics and petro chemicals. The last term of the program will be spent entirely on an applied project, which will integrate applied research, essentially allowing students to spend an entire semester trying to solve a real world issue.

With growing capabilities and expertise to support research in the natural health sector, the College saw this as an opportunity to expand training and education to support these emerging industry sectors, explains Dave Machacek, Dean, Technology & Trades, Lambton College.

“With so much recent growth, Lambton College currently has infrastructure and equipment that you won’t find at any other post-secondary institution in the province,” he said. “In the first two years of this program, students will be trained to analyze these technologies while learning to use our specialized equipment, and the last term will be used to apply that learning to solve real problems.”

Laboratory technologists are critical in many growing industries such as chemical products and materials, petroleum refineries, food processing, breweries, distilleries, pharmaceutical manufacturing and development, natural health products and the new cannabis sector.

With the success of the College’s Bioindustrial Process Research Centre (BPRC), which is part of the Centre of Excellence in Energy & Bioindustrial Technologies, existing expertise and infrastructure in process design, analytical chemistry, process optimization and material science are readily available to support the learning outcomes of this new program.
