Lambton College adding new Workplace Safety program to full-time diploma roster for fall 2017

September 28, 2016

SARNIA, September 28, 2016 – Lambton College is pleased to announce it will be adding a brand new program to its growing roster of technology diplomas.

The Workplace Safety & Prevention program is the only two-year diploma program of its kind offered in Ontario.

Alan Arbour, Dean, School of Technology, Energy & Apprenticeship at Lambton College, says the program has been designed with industry input to meet the growing demand for occupational health and safety professionals.

“What is really unique about this program is that students will be trained to identify, assess and manage risks in a variety of work environments,” he explains. “Students will not only study the legislative and legal aspects of this profession, they’ll also participate in hands-on exercises related to industrial hygiene and toxicology, fire protection, and environmental management.”

Arbour adds that the curriculum also embeds the Factor 1 competencies required for students to challenge the corresponding examination through the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP).

The new program will train students to define health and safety objectives and develop corresponding policies and procedures. Students will learn the skills necessary to identify and report on safety and health conditions in a workplace. A strong emphasis will be placed on recognizing, preventing and evaluating workplace hazards.

One of the biggest benefits of the new Workplace Safety & Prevention program is that students may have the opportunity to participate in a 280-hour field placement. Through this field placement experience, students will be directly exposed to industry protocols and technology while focusing on injury and disease prevention in the workplace.

Successful graduates will have the confidence and ability to conduct on-the-job risk assessments and hygiene tests to prevent hazards and harm to workers, property, the environment, and the general public.
