August 3, 2017

SARNIA, August 3, 2017 – The new Lambton Lions Varsity Esports team has named a head coach.

John Faragher, Coordinator, Athletics at Lambton College recently announced Dave Mastrobuono has accepted the position as head coach for the inaugural season.

Mastrobuono, a Sarnia native and Lambton College graduate, is an esports veteran who built a name for himself gaming competitively as a Counter-Strike 1.6 player. At the height of his gaming career, Mastrobuono competed against some of the best esports teams in North America, playing in the Cyberathlete Professional League. In addition to attending multiple tournaments via the Toronto Fun League, he also competed at the World Cyber Games in 2004, where he played against some of the top teams in the world.

Currently employed as a Certified Service Technician for Xerox at Lambton College, Mastrobuono says he’s excited to have an opportunity to highlight the gaming talent that exists at the College and to take on such an important role for the new esports team.

“I’ve always been a dedicated and competitive gamer and I’m pleased to have the opportunity to pass on my knowledge and experience to a new generation of competitive gamers,” he says.

Back in March, Lambton College announced it would be launching an official esports initiative for fall 2017, including a varsity esports team and the opening of a campus esports arena, which will be one of the first of its kind at a Canadian College.

Tryouts for the College’s first varsity esports team will take place September 7 and 8. The team will compete with other post-secondary esports teams across North America in both the Collegiate Starleague and National Association of Collegiate Esports. The College aims to have teams competing in League of Legends, CS:GO and Overwatch.

A grand opening ceremony for the new arena is currently being planned for Thursday, September 7. A variety of esports industry representatives from across North America are expected to be in attendance.

“We look forward to having Dave on board at Lambton College,” says Faragher. “His experience as a player and a Lambton College student will play a key role in helping our esports athletes grow both as individuals and as a team. We look forward to watching our new esports team develop under his leadership.”
