Lambton College to Field Men’s Varsity Baseball Team

February 1, 2019

SARNIA, February 1, 2019 – Lambton College is ready to play ball!

With the recent opening of the new Athletics & Fitness Complex and rising success and interest in Varsity programs, Lambton College is planning to field its first ever Men’s Varsity Baseball team.

Greg Stewart, Manager of Athletics & Recreation said the decision to join the college baseball circuit was a logical choice for the College.

“We’re located in one of the most successful baseball regions in the province,” explains Stewart. “We have access to some of the best ball diamonds in Ontario, as well as professional training and coaching, all of which creates an opportunity for Lambton College to build a strong, community-focused program.”

Stewart said the College has already made arrangements to work closely with the Sarnia Braves Baseball Club to assist in building and recruiting baseball talent, particularly players who hail from local minor baseball programs. The College is also working closely with the City of Sarnia’s Parks & Recreation Department and is exploring additional community partnerships that would prove beneficial to developing the program.

The College has also secured local baseball talents James Grant and Justin Randall to head up the new team. Grant currently coaches the Sarnia Braves Senior AAA Baseball Club, and the College’s Men’s Basketball team, which has seen tremendous growth and success under his direction. Randall also has five years of professional baseball experience under his belt. Additional support and training will also be provided by long-time Lambton College Athletics coordinator John Faragher, and local athlete Joel Ainsworth, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“In terms of coaching, we feel we have a highly qualified group of individuals,” says Stewart. “We have a solid lineup of successful coaching staff, and nationally recognized mentors who are well-known for their professional baseball careers. We are confident that this amazing coaching staff will help our players grow and develop into one of the top teams in college baseball.”

The latest Lambton College Varsity team will compete in the Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA), which is the same league that the College’s basketball and soccer teams compete in.

The league format will consist of an approximately 20 game season that will see Lambton competing against other institutions such as Fanshawe, St. Clair, Humber, Seneca, George Brown and Durham. Game days will primarily be played as double headers and the season will culminate in a year end provincial championship.

Details of the Men’s Varsity Baseball program are still being finalized. Anybody interested in more information can contact Stewart directly at 519-542-7751 ext. 3424 or via email at greg.stewart@lambtoncollege.ca.

Varsity Baseball is just the latest in the College’s rapidly expanding lineup of athletics and recreation offerings. In addition to Men’s and Women’s basketball and soccer, as well as Firefit, and competitive esports, the College is also in the process of launching indoor Men’s and Women’s Varsity Soccer teams for fall 2019.
