Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams Post Perfect Record Following Weekend Tournaments

SARNIA, September 30, 2019 – Opening weekend could not have gone better for the Lambton Lions Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams. Participating in separate exhibition tournaments over the weekend, the teams posted a combined record of 5-0, creating major buzz ahead of the upcoming season.

The Men’s team claimed tournament gold in Kingston, posting a 3-0 record at the St. Lawrence College Invitational hosted by the St. Lawrence Vikings.

Likewise, the Women’s team picked up two wins at the Fall Classic hosted by the Loyalist Lancers in Belleville.

The Men’s squad opened their weekend series with a six point win over the George Brown Huskies in a rematch from the 2019 playoffs. From there, the Lions notched a convincing 84-71 win over the Centennial Colts on Saturday afternoon to punch their ticket to the Championship game.

During the final game on Saturday night, the Lions found themselves in tough spot against the Dynamiques de Sainte-Foy from the Réseau du Sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ). In a back-and-forth affair, Lambton secured the 81-77 win to close their weekend with a 3-0 record.

“We weren’t sure how it was going to go, as we have a lot of new faces on the team this season,” said James Grant, Head Coach, Men’s Basketball. “There’s a heightened level of cohesion within the team early on, and the level of respect between players is higher than it has been in years past at this point in the season.”

Meanwhile, up in Belleville, the Women were preparing to start their season with a similar showing Saturday against the John Abbott Islanders. While they struggled a little bit out of the gate, the Lions managed to take the game with a 51-46 win.

On Sunday afternoon, the Lions took on the Loyalist Lancers to close out the event. Lambton picked up a 62-49 win over the host team to end their weekend with a perfect 2-0 record.

“Coming home with two wins is great,” said Kendel Ross, Head Coach, Women’s Basketball. “It’s fairly early in the season and there’s still lots to work on, but everyone got a chance to show what they can do.”

The weekend events gave both teams their first taste of game action ahead of the 2019-20 regular season. The early results have both the players and Lions fans excited for the upcoming season, which will also see Lambton host the 2020 OCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in March at the College’s Athletics & Fitness Complex.

Both teams have one more exhibition tournament before starting regular season play. The Women will host the Can-Am Collegiate Classic from October 5 thru 6 at the College while the Men will head back on the road to take part in the Dave Stewart Tip-Off, hosted by the Durham Lords from October 4-5.
