Students, faculty and staff served up a free pancake breakfast in a festive display of thanks to NOVA Chemicals who recently donated a used fire truck to the College.

In the spirit of giving, the company also filled the truck with non-perishable food items to be donated to the Lambton College Student Food Bank, which is managed by the Inn of the Good Shepherd.

The pumper truck, a Freightliner previously used at the NOVA Chemicals Corunna Site, will be utilized by students enrolled in the College’s Fire Sciences programs. The new equipment will help provide valuable, real-world training opportunities for both students and industrial partners of the College, including NOVA Chemicals who currently trains upwards of 150 employees at the facility each year.

“Providing our students with experiential learning opportunities that prepare them to succeed in the workforce is one of the College’s biggest priorities,” says Judith Morris, President & CEO, Lambton College. “The importance of this type of equipment donation from our industry partners can’t be overstated. On behalf of the College, I want to thank NOVA Chemicals for generously supporting our students in their real-world training.”

Representatives from NOVA Chemicals joined Morris and other members of the College community for the morning event, along with Myles Vanni, Executive Director of The Inn of the Good Shepherd who was on hand to accept the food bank donation.

The pumper truck is just the latest addition to the facility’s lineup of specialty training equipment. The Fire School is the largest fire training centre in Canada, featuring a four-story burn tower that uses live-fueled fire props to achieve the most realistic firefighting training in real-world scenarios.

There are approximately 150 students currently enrolled in the College’s Pre-Service Firefighter Education & Training, and Fire Science Technology programs.
