Lambton College PSW grads inspire $350,000 donation

SARNIA, November 9, 2020 - The Lambton College Foundation recently received a significant scholarship donation. James King, a retired businessman, was inspired to make the $350,000 donation in memory of his late wife Catherine and in honour of the exemplary care she received from Lambton College Personal Support Worker (PSW) graduates at an area nursing home.

The $350,000 has gone into an endowed account. The Catherine King PSW Scholarship will provide full tuition to at least one PSW student per year.

“I am overjoyed and extremely grateful for the generosity from Mr. King, though I'm not surprised our PSW grads had such an impact,” says Silvana Macdonald, Dean, Health, Community Services & Creative Design at Lambton College. “Our PSW program produces graduates who are highly-trained, caring, compassionate, and ready to work from day one. I'm grateful to Catherine and James King for making this education even more accessible.”

While in a nursing home, Catherine easily bonded with her personal support workers. Throughout her life Catherine had been known for her ability to form meaningful connections with nearly everyone she met. Nevertheless, Mr. King was struck by how deeply her PSWs cared for her, going above and beyond their duties. He reminisces happily on how they got Catherine tapping her foot and even dancing by keying in on an old love for country music.

“In my experience with personal support workers I have seen that they are so dedicated,” says Mr. King. “I hope this scholarship inspires its recipients to keep that dedication up. I hope they take excellent care of their clients. I think they will.”

Following Catherine's experience with Lambton College graduates, Mr. King has been advocating to the Ministry on behalf of the personal support worker profession. For now, Catherine King's legacy lives on through a scholarship that will provide meaningful support to Lambton College PSW students in perpetuity.

“I wanted to do something in Cathy's memory,” says Mr. King. “I can't think of anything better.”
