Lambton College Fire Science Professor Organizes 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

SARNIA, September 1, 2021 – A memorial stair climb to honour the 343 New York City firefighters who lost their lives in the attacks on the World Trade Centre has raised nearly US$28,000.

The event, which is taking place on the 20th anniversary of the September 11 tragedy, will see climbers – some in full firefighting gear – cover approximately 2,200 steps, or the equivalent to the 110 storeys firefighters needed to climb to reach the top of the towers that fateful day.

Organizer Scott Brown, a Fire Science professor at Lambton College, anticipates the climb will take anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours for the 210 participants who will climb the stairs at Sarnia’s Progressive Auto Sales Arena that day.

Guests of the event will gather on the morning of September 11 in Lambton College’s Cestar Group Athletics & Fitness Complex for opening ceremonies at 8 a.m. After which, the Sarnia Legion Pipe Band is will lead a procession to the nearby arena.

Brown says the goal is to get the first climber to hit the steps at 8:46 a.m. to coincide with the exact time the first plane hit the first tower. Every climber will don a badge bearing the name and photo of a fallen 9/11 firefighter.

For many years, fire departments across North America have held annual memorial stair climbs to honour the fallen. Brown says Lambton’s event is unique in that funds raised will support both the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) in the U.S.A. and the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF), who in turn provide important resources for families of firefighters who have lost their lives while on duty.

“I think it’s really important that we continue to honour the fallen firefighters and other first responders who risked their lives attempting to save others,” says Brown. “I’m very thankful for the support we’ve received to make this event successful and to all our participants for taking the time to recognize the significance of those sacrifices on the 20th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.”

While registration for the event has been closed, donations are still being accepted online at https://nfff.akaraisin.com/ui/lambton.
