    Ontario Sugar Beet Growers Association

Mounds of sugar beets are a familiar autumnal sight for rural Ontarians. Thanks to such a consistently plentiful harvest, the Ontario Sugar Beet Growers Association (OSGA) has seen great success in shipping their beet crop to Michigan for processing.

With an aim to localize sugar production, the collective has proposed building a sugar beet processing facility right here in Sarnia to enhance our own economy and bio-industrial landscape.

With the help of an Innovation Enhancement Grant, our Bio-Industrial Process Research Centre was able to conduct a feasibility study into the market for sugar beet products. This study’s results acted in favour of the OSGA’s ambitions, showing a strong potential market for sugar production in this region of Ontario.

The project has since moved to the design phase of the processing facility. Sarnia could soon become a hub for sugar production. How’s that for sweet success?
