Financial Planners work with clients to identify financial goals and to develop personalized savings and investment plans to realize those objectives. The Financial Planning certificate is an approved core curriculum program for students pursuing the internationally recognized Certified Financial Planner® designation.

The courses in the program are also suitable for students interested in learning more about financial planning for their own purposes but who are not seeking a professional designation. 

Successful completion of the Financial Planning certificate is the first step in the process of obtaining the Certified Financial Planner® designation.

Lambton College is a CIFP Academic Partner and an FP Canada Approved Curriculum Provider.

Please Note: Effective April 2022, a post-secondary degree will be a requirement for CFP certification.

Pursuing a Certified Financial Planner Designation

Upon successful completion of the Financial Planning Certificate, students pursuing the Certified Financial Planner® designation will:

  1. Participate in an online program review with the Canadian Institute of Financial Planning (CIFP)
  2. Write an in-class CIFP exam
  3. Write the FP Canada™ Level 1 Examination

Admission Requirements

O.S.S.D. or equivalent with:

  • Grade 11 or 12 Mathematics (recommended)

Academic admission requirements can be obtained through Academic Upgrading and the Pre-Programs at Lambton College.

Prior Learning Assessment

If you believe you have an equivalent level of knowledge and would like credit through Prior Learning Assessment, please contact counselling@lambtoncollege.ca or call 519-479-1023 at least two weeks before classes begin.

Credential Eligibility

If you are taking courses with the intention of completing this program and earning a credential, you must meet the Admission Requirements. It is your responsibility to supply proof of admission requirements to the Office of the Registrar before completing three courses in this program.

If you complete the program but fail to provide proof of admission requirements, you will be ineligible to receive your credential.

Course Fees

  • Exact costs can be obtained during the registration process. Visit the Course List and select an individual course for associated course fees.

Graduation Fees

  • Students who successfully complete all the academic requirements for this program should submit their intent to graduate in order to receive their credential. The graduate module can be completed on myLambton via Self Service.

    A graduation fee of about $75 is added to your account upon verification that admission requirements have been met. For exact fees contact your Enrolment Services Professional.

Textbooks

  • Textbook costs may be applicable to each course. Most textbooks can be purchased through textnet.ca, but some exceptions do apply. Some courses may have software or equipment requirements that are not included in the cost of the course and are the responsibility of the student. Please see individual course pages for course-specific textbook information.

Taxes in Canada can account for a large portion of an individual's expenditures; as such Income Tax Planning plays an important role in providing individuals with methods to reduce and or eliminate taxes whenever possible. The Income Tax Planning Course will lead learns through completing basic income tax returns, a range of business structures, as well as federal and provincial tax legislation. Learners will also gain knowledge on how to make effective use numerous tax deductions and credits; various types of tax advantages and the trade-offs between different benefits

Host Course Name: Income Tax Planning

The average life expectancy of Canadians has increased exponentially over the decades as such estate planning and risk management are also moving to the forefront of overall financial planning. The Risk Management and Estate Planning course will provide learners with an in-depth understanding of risk management issues including disability, death, property and liability. It will also prepare learners in respect to estate planning issues pertaining to property interests, family law, will preparation and taxation upon death.

Host Course Name: Risk Management and Estate Planning

In today's fast paced investment environment it is not only necessary but vital that learners obtain the knowledge required to design client investment portfolios that will help clients meet their wealth accumulation goals.

The Strategic Investment Planning course will provide learners with an in-depth understanding of investment products and the methods available in preparing and evaluating investment portfolios for their prospective clients. Strategic investment planning process will be introduced to be used when designing and evaluating individual investment portfolios.

Host Course Name: Strategic Investment Planning

With the increase in life expectancy for both men and women retirement planning has become increasingly important in preparing individuals' overall financial plans. The Retirement Planning course will provide learners with the basic tools and skills needed to prepare retirement plans for their prospective clients. Learners will review various sources of income at retirement including; Government Sponsored Retirement Income Programs, Employer Sponsored Pension Plans, Deferred Profit Sharing Plans and Personal Savings Plans and incorporate these into retirement savings plans and post-retirement income plans. This unit also incorporates Education Planning, Home Buyers' Plan and Tax-Free Savings, as they relate to retirement and savings.

Technology Requirements

It is required that students purchase a laptop with a Windows operating system.

Internet Speed Requirements

For best performance for students learning remotely, an internet connection with a minimum of 40 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speed is recommended in order to effectively use video conferencing and remote lecture delivery software as well as, other online resources remotely. Due to the large area over which students may be dispersed, we are unable to recommend a specific provider, so you will need to inquire around your area to find one that best suits your needs.

Minimum Laptop Requirements

In order to access the internet and virtually-delivered software and courseware, student laptops should include the following at a minimum. By meeting the following specifications, students will be equipped to access software and courseware on their laptop through the internet:

  • Intel i5 8th Gen Processor or equivalent
  • 16 GB of RAM (with a minimum of 8 GB)
  • 100 GB HDD or more
  • HD Graphics
  • Webcam with a microphone
  • Wireless 802.11n/ac 5ghz capable
  • Windows Operating System (Windows 11)

Software

To ensure students are getting the most our of their classroom experience, some software will be required.

Lambton College has made this software easily accessible online. Students can leverage our Microsoft Office 365 software packages and services. In addition, much of the software you require for your courses will be available on demand for use on any device - on or off campus.
