Program Capabilities

Program Capabilities outline what skills students should possess as they progress through each term/year of their program.

Students and employers will find this information most useful and can reference either the list of skills or the full program capabilities document to ensure students are gaining the experience they need to fulfill the program requirements.

Term 1

  • Proficient keyboarding skills (53 nwpm minimum) with an emphasis on excellent spelling, punctuation, grammar and expert proofreading. Advanced Word to apply mail merge, document mark up, long documents, macros and forms.
  • Access to organize business or personal records in a table, perform queries, create forms and professional looking reports.
  • Fundamentals of building a medical vocabulary applicable to any branch of medicine including abbreviations, symbols, and terms of common diseases, operations, medications, laboratory tests, x-ray, and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Develop medical language skills within the context of medical reports, formatting and styles. Development of speed and accuracy in transcription of spoken reports.
  • Medical keyboarding skills, medical language skills and grammatical and office skills with an emphasis on accuracy, proofreading and attention to detail
  • Practical and advanced oral and written business communications skills including research, proposal writing, and citing information (APA) to produce reports.

Term 2

  • Additional fundamentals of building a medical vocabulary applicable to any branch of medicine including abbreviations, symbols, and terms of common diseases, operations, medications, laboratory tests, x-ray, and other diagnostic procedures including physiology and anatomy.
  • Medical Office Procedures, and Office Systems Management skills where students are involved in a simulated office setting demonstrating their ability to book appointments, perform records management, be knowledgeable in medical legalities, practice excellent interpersonal skills, compiles and processes information utilizing medical documents while applying spreadsheet and database software skills. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint programs are all utilized.
  • Medical transcription skills are continued from Term 3 to transcribe dictated medical reports including history and physical, radiology, operative, discharge and death summary. These case histories are derived from actual files of a large health care facility.
  • Basic principles of Health Claim Billing in Ontario, learning to use schedule of benefits and be introduced to computerized billing.
  • Advanced medical keyboarding skills, medical language skills and grammatical and office skills to produce medical records, reports, as well as email, regular mail and other medical-related documents.
  • Pharmacology knowledge required by a medical office administrator in his/her work setting with general information concerning the therapeutic use of drugs to maintain health and treat illness.
  • Effective interpersonal communication, team building and group dynamics skills.
