Program Information

Looking for a well-rounded education focused on effective business management? The Business Management program is designed for university and college graduates who are eager to expand their management knowledge and skills. Using a student-centred, practical approach to learning, students work with professors with real world business experience to develop the tools needed for success in a Canadian or international business environment.

The curriculum has a broad focus designed to develop the fundamental skills necessary to manage human, physical and financial resources in order to meet the strategic goals of an organization. Students will learn the essential aspects of business including marketing, sales, accounting, finance, human resources management and business communications. Through hands-on learning approaches, students will graduate with the communication skills, confidence and independent learning abilities needed to be successful in today's business world.

The work term that concludes the program provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience that will assist them in finding permanent employment after graduation.

This Lambton College program is licensed to and delivered by Cestar College (PDF), a licensed private career college in Toronto, Ontario. Students that are registered at Lambton in Toronto are students of a public college and as such, will receive full credit from Lambton College for all Lambton College courses completed at the Cestar College campus in Toronto. Students who meet program graduation requirements will graduate with a credential from Lambton College.

Admission Requirements

A college diploma or university degree.

The admissions process is competitive and meeting the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee admission.

English Language Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate language proficiency by submitting one of the following scores:

  • IELTS of 6.5
    - or -
    IELTS of 6.0 + Completion of EAP-3106 (English for Academic Purposes) during first term of study.
  • TOEFL iBT 79
    -or-
    TOEFL 70 + Completion of EAP-3106 (English for Academic Purposes) during first term of study.
  • Passed Lambton Institute of English placement test 

Applicants from India, China, Vietnam, Philippines and Pakistan should note that IELTS is the only proficiency score accepted by the Study Direct Stream (SDS) program. Additional country-specific requirements may also be applicable.

Meeting the minimum English requirements does not guarantee admission. Students with higher English proficiency scores will receive priority in the admission assessment process.

Not all students will qualify for EAP-3106 in place of the required IELTS or TOEFL test scores.


Course List

MAN-1103: Human Resource Management

Effective Human Resources Management (HRM) is critical to the success of organizations today. This course will provide an overview of the key concepts of HR management and will include some history and theory of the HR function and important terminology. It will introduce students to the core competencies of effective HR practitioners and allow for self-assessment against these competencies. We will be discussing core HR practice areas such as Strategic Planning, HR Planning, HR Administration, Talent Management, Training Learning and Development, Performance Assessment, Total Rewards (including Compensation and Benefits) Employee and Labour Relations and Health and Safety in the workplace. In addition, the course looks at the legal environment for effective HR management, and the role of HRM in mergers and acquisitions and organizational change management.

MKT-1143: Marketing Fundamentals

This course introduces students to the foundations of successful marketing and prepares them for advanced marketing courses. The emphasis is on learning and applying marketing concepts in an ever-changing environment that is becoming more global in nature. Topics covered include the following: understanding the marketing environment, consumer and business behaviour, marketing intelligence, and the design and implementation of effective marketing strategies and marketing mix elements.

ACC-1093: Accounting Concepts I

This course is an introduction to the theory of accounting and the standard methods of recordkeeping for non-accounting major students. Generally accepted accounting principles and concepts are emphasized in the preparation of financial statements.

COM-3013: Professional Communications

This course is designed for international students with diplomas or degrees. It focuses on polishing communications skills acquired through one's academic career and workplace experience. Through various business writing and speaking scenarios, students learn Canadian business practices and communication styles. Close attention is paid to proper incorporation of the intellectual property of others to ensure academic integrity. Students will practice organized and dynamic speaking and will strive for polished business documents.

ECO-1503: Principals of Economics

This course is a survey of the principles which apply to our society's efforts to solve economic problems. The survey includes an examination of fundamental economic problems, economic models, the nature of the Canadian economy, employment, inflation, the role of governments in managing the economy, and the functioning of demand, supply, and firms within the market system.

BUS-1234: Computer Applications for Business

Strong computer skills are essential to finding employment in management and administration. This course provides students with resources and guidance to develop skills in Microsoft Office applications. While the focus will be spent learning and applying document processing, presentation and extra time on spreadsheet management tools, students will also develop skills in time management, self-discipline, and attention to detail. Students will also have an opportunity to improve their ability to read and follow written instructions. Computer Applications for Business is a course delivered using practical hands-on applications and comprises additional online skills assessment and training tools purposefully designed to provide flexibility in learning. This course further prepares students to apply these professional business application skills, with enhanced emphasis on spreadsheet management as they continue and expand in their program areas of study.

ADR-1003: Alternative Dispute Resolution

This course introduces students to methods of dealing with conflict in the workplace. Students will examine different strategies for resolving workplace conflict, including the importance of effective communication. In addition, students will study various negotiation and mediation techniques.

ACC-3403: Computerized Accounting Systems

This course utilizes the Sage 50 Accounting for Windows computer-based accounting software to illustrate the practical uses of computers in a financial accounting setting. Students create files, set up historical data, record entries in journals and ledgers and prepare reports. This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply the practical and theoretical accounting concepts learned in previous and concurrent accounting courses to a computerized accounting system.

BUS-1103: Global Business Principles

This course introduces students to the study of business and builds a necessary foundation for subsequent courses in Business programs. Areas covered include the following: the free enterprise system, business environments, ownership, organizational culture and structure, and the functional areas of business including accounting, human resources, production, and marketing. The examination of core business functions within the context of global business, entrepreneurship, ethics, and social responsibility enables students to obtain a holistic view of the world of business. This, in turn, leads to an understanding of the critical success factors of a domestic or international business venture.

MKT-3353: Integrated Marketing Communications

In today's marketing world, there are more advertising contact points and specialized media competing for consumer's attention than ever before. To effectively break through the clutter, companies need to use a well-coordinated approach to selecting different promotional methods to differentiate their communication and present a consistent message to target audiences. This course introduces students to the concept of integrated marketing communications (IMC); a strategic planning process that helps companies identify the most appropriate and effective methods for communicating and building relationships with consumers. Students will learn the essential components of an IMC plan, including how to integrate advertising, sales promotions, public relations, direct marketing and digital media to maximize the impact of communications. Students will utilize this knowledge to build their own comprehensive marketing communications plan for a selected product or service.

MKT-3403: Selling

This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the sales process, and it is intended to help students to develop their selling, communication, and negotiation skills in order to be successful in a sales career. Topics presented include the following: the steps in the selling process, ethical issues in selling, the importance of the sales function, and integrating technology in the sales process. Students also learn how to develop negotiation skills, establish successful customer relationships, and develop winning communication skills in a variety of presentation situations. This course is highly interactive, and each student will be expected to fully participate online. Each student will be required to prepare and deliver a sales presentation as a part of this course.

LAW-1003: Business Law

In this course, students are prepared for a business environment increasingly affected by laws. They learn how laws must be understood and applied by management in the conduct of business. They also learn how to analyze a business situation from a general legal perspective. Emphasis is placed on methods of dispute resolution, contracts, torts, employment law, methods of carrying on business, creditors' rights, sale of goods and marketing law.

CPP-1001: Co-op Preparation

This course will provide students with employment preparatory skills specifically related to Co-operative Education. This will include understanding the Co-operative Education & Internship Policy, understanding the support system available through the Co-op and Career Services department, utilizing social media, preparing effective cover letters & resume as well as the fundamentals of behavioural based interviewing.

Academic Break

FIN-1013: Financial Analysis and Budgeting

This course is an introduction to the essentials of financial management with a view for wealth maximization of a business enterprise. Topics covered in this course include the following: analysis of financial performance, cost-volume-profit analysis, financing alternatives and costs, management of working capital, budgeting, and capital investment decisions.

MAN-1163: Organizational Behaviour

This subject is an examination of the contemporary Canadian business environment including the organization, leadership and management decision process which influences the behaviour of individuals and groups. Increased global competition, technological change and the rising expectations of both employees and employers have underlined the need for improved and more effective leadership. This subject provides a better understanding of this process.

MKT-3103: Consumer Behaviour

Consumer behaviour is one of the most exciting areas in the study of marketing. Everyday, a variety of media inform, persuade, and influence our purchase decisions. These media compete with other stimuli for our attention and our hard-earned money. In studying consumer behaviour, students will learn how marketers identify and work with these sources of influence, how we think and how we process information. Students will also learn how their relationships with others and their dreams and aspirations help shape their product choices and purchase decisions.

HRM-3103: Employment Law

Employment law affects numerous human resource management activities including planning, recruiting, selection, compensation, retention, and termination of employees. The purpose of this course is to review the legal and managerial implications of employment law for human resource management. It includes the formation, terms, regulation and termination of the employment relationship. The course topics include: sources of employment law; whether individuals are employees or independent contractors; discrimination and human rights; employment standards; the duties employees owe to employers; the duties employers owe to employees; formation of the employment contract; the terms of an employment contract; privacy; termination of employment; wrongful dismissal; health and safety; workplace safety and insurance; equity issues; and how employment related information can be found on the internet.

MKT-3113: Retailing

This course provides students with a solid understanding of the complexity of operating a retail business in Canada and serves as a good foundation for a career in retailing or other industries that support the retail supply chain. The course provides an overview of the retail industry in Canada and its importance in the Canadian economy. The dynamic retail environment and the changing retail customer are investigated. Students will evaluate market opportunities, location considerations, store design and layout decisions to consider when planning a store. Students will be introduced to retail financial analysis and the operational decision functions of buying, handling and pricing merchandise.

MKT-3213: Business Intelligence I

Business Intelligence I introduces students to the constantly expanding world of secondary data research. This is the first of two research courses designed to develop research techniques and skills that meet the needs of today's business. In Business Intelligence I, students develop their research technology skills by learning how to locate, evaluate, and qualify high-quality data. Students will develop skills to critically interpret and evaluate the data collected and suggest potential trends and implications. An important focus is of the course is learning to create appropriate tables and charts that aid in understanding the data. By tackling four business reports, students will learn to craft high-quality written reports with accurate references and citations. Throughout the course, students will be exposed to a wide variety of government and business information that will help them expand their knowledge of the dynamic business environment.

CPL-1049: Co-op Work Term - Full-Time*

Co-operative education provides students with the opportunity to apply classroom learning to the workplace, undertake career sampling and gain valuable work experience that may assist students in leveraging employment after graduation. *In order to be eligible to participate in a full-time Co-op Work Term (CPL-1049) students must have a GPA of 2.8 or greater.

Failing to do so will require the students to enroll in CPL-5559 WIL Project at an additional cost to the student.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates will be prepared to work in numerous business sectors, from entry-level work to movement into management. Depending on the unique qualifications of the graduates, these could include employment in Canadian and international locations in the areas of manufacturing, market research, retail, logistics, banking, insurance, and sales. Some graduates may opt to become entrepreneurs and develop their own business.
