Program Capabilities

Program Capabilities outline what skills students should possess as they progress through each term/year of their program.

Students and employers will find this information most useful and can reference either the list of skills or the full program capabilities document to ensure students are gaining the experience they need to fulfill the program requirements.

Term 2

  • Knowledge of W.H.M.I.S., TDG, and standard personal protective equipment
  • Familiar with key components of Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Familiar with the construction and use of relief valves and rupture discs
  • Identifying process piping, flanges, fittings and their uses
  • Perform 4th Class level operating engineering calculations
  • Comply with procedures for safe vessel entry, red tag lockout, and other safety issues
  • Discuss principles of general chemistry applicable to process industries
  • Describe typical steam boiler configurations
  • Operate and troubleshoot package fire-tube and water-tube boiler installations
  • Perform basic steam thermodynamics calculation relevant to power plants
  • Perform boiler feed water testing and treatment
  • Perform calculations and analysis of basic electrical circuits
  • Exhibit effective written and verbal workplace communications skills
  • Have academic preparation to write 4A exam of 4th Class Operating Engineering


Term 3

  • Application and construction of dynamic and positive displacement pumps and seals
  • Application and construction of compressors, steam and gas turbines
  • Explain construction and types of heat exchangers, process distillation and absorber towers and other common process equipment
  • Perform start-up procedures on rotating equipment
  • Apply knowledge of refrigeration systems to operating vapour compression units
  • Perform basic thermodynamic calculations as pertaining to refrigeration units
  • Application of temperature, flow, level and pressure devices and signal transmission
  • Application of control valves and other final control elements
  • Perform basic maintenance on equipment
  • Demonstrate basic mechanical skills in the areas of piping, equipment seals and packing, welding, gas cutting, valve repair
  • Describe building services and HVAC systems for commercial and industrial buildings
  • Knowledge of the principles of sustainable development in a community
  • Decision making, problem solving and effective team work skills
  • Have academic preparation to write 4B exam of 4th Class Operating Engineering
  • TSSA has approved 9 months practical steam time reduction toward 4th Class Operating Engineering


Upon Graduation

  • Knowledge of operating principles of AC and DC electric motors and generators and describe various types and applications of each
  • Familiar with the operation of transformers and variable frequency drive units
  • Explain the construction and application of common process equipment at advanced level
  • Define fluid properties and perform basic fluid flow calculations
  • Analyze instrumentation systems and loop wiring diagrams
  • Perform sizing of basic instrumentation equipment and control valves
  • Explain various types of industrial processes
  • Perform basic mathematical calculus computations
  • Perform Operating Engineering Calculations to the 3rd and 2ndClass level>
  • Explain the theory of boiler combustion and perform calculations of combustion
  • Perform advanced thermodynamic calculations on steam systems
  • Operating and troubleshoot steam systems and a turbo-generator unit under load
  • Sketch and describe the details of high pressure power plants and cogeneration
  • Analyze piping systems and pressure vessels for appropriate code requirements
  • Analyze piping systems for adequate support and metallurgical properties
  • Explain the theory of vapour compression and absorption refrigeration units
  • Operate and troubleshoot advanced level refrigeration units
  • Knowledge of types of control variables, loop tuning, and control systems
  • Operate an advanced power plant simulator and steam utility plant
  • Discuss power plant administration principles
  • Describe methods of fire protection and plant safety protocols for a power facility
  • Knowledge of environmental and pollution control strategies for air, water, and solid waste
  • Operate and interpret data from online gas chromatographs and other process analyzers
  • Apply principles of wastewater treatment to industrial processes
  • Comply with Responsible Care, ISO, and other environmental and safety protocols
  • Knowledge of shutdown planning and scheduling methodology
  • Describe alternative power production processes including solar, wind and biomass
  • TSSA has approved 11 months practical steam time reduction toward 3rd Class Operating Engineering
