Co-op Info

Co-op students have the opportunity to apply classroom learning to the workplace. Co-op placement opportunities help students gain valuable work experience that may assist them in finding permanent employment after they graduate. Co-op Eligibility

In order to be eligible to apply for a co-op, students must:

  • Have successfully completed all courses required by the program for the terms prior to the recruitment term*
  • Be enrolled in all courses required for the recruitment term*
  • Have a minimum program cumulative GPA of 2.8 or greater

In order to be eligible to participate in a co-op or internship, students must:

  • Successfully complete all required courses for all terms preceding the work term*
  • Have a minimum program cumulative GPA of 2.8 or greater
  • Have paid fees in full

*Definitions

Recruitment Term - the term in which the student is applying for a work experience to occur in the next subsequent work term (term prior to work term).

Work Term - the term in which the student is engaged and enrolled in a work experience. 

Securing a Co-op Placement

The job market for co-op is very competitive and students are expected to be active participants in their job searches, this includes demonstrated activity on the myCareer System.

Lambton College cannot guarantee co-op positions for students. Success in finding a co-op involves a number of factors that are not controlled by Lambton College.

Limited assistance is provided to students in finding co-op placements. Students will also be expected to canvass employers to find their own placements. Completing either a co-op work term or Applied Project - due to a low GPA (less than 2.8) - is mandatory for graduation.

Any student who secures his or her own co-op position must verify with the Co-op & Career Advisor assigned to the program that the proposed co-op is appropriate and will be approved before accepting the position.

Term 4 students in co-op programs have a deadline of 30 days to have their paper work approved and be registered in CPL-1049 or CPL-1069. If students do not have a co-op by this date, students will be put on an unscheduled break. Students are advised to continue their active job search and will be enrolled in CPL-1049 for the following term.

Co-op Fees and Associated Costs

Students pay co-op fees in order to receive employment support services from Co-op & Career Advisors including co-op preparation workshops, one-on-one assistance and the opportunity to apply for co-op positions posted on the myCareer System.

Students are responsible for all personal costs, relocation costs, transportation arrangements to employment interviews and to the job site, and for living accommodations during co-op terms. Relocation to different cities in Canada is often required.

To qualify as a co-op credit the student must:

  • Complete of a minimum of 420 hours of full time co-op work over the four-month period in term 4
  • Full-time is defined by the Government of Canada as 30 hours of work per week or more
  • A maximum of 40 hours per week will be approved for co-op credits. Students may not submit overtime hours for their co-op credits
