Program Information

In this multi-disciplined program, students in the Lambton College Facilities and Property Management, Ontario College Graduate Certificate utilize existing related education or experience to learn and apply a variety of skills to help operate, administer and manage facility and property operations. In this program, students study the skills and knowledge associated with facility and property administration, including land use, property evaluation, financing, site administration and maintenance and owner/management relations. Students develop a foundation of business skills, including communications, accounting, human resources, relationship managing and marketing strategies that apply to the property facility and management industries of today.

Please Note: Upon successful completion of the five designated Institute of Housing Management (IHM) courses and one specified elective the students will be granted a Candidate status with the Institute of Housing Management.

Fall 2023 Delivery Format

Term 1 classes will be delivered in person and students will be required to be on campus for the duration of the term. The 2023 Fall term begins on September 6. However, to allow for travel delays, classes will be remote until September 16. Students must be on campus to join in-person classes starting September 18, 2023.

Admission Requirements

A university degree or equivalent.

English Language Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate language proficiency by submitting one of the following scores:

  • IELTS of 6.5
  • TOEFL iBT 79
  • Passed Lambton Institute of English placement test 

Please Note: IELTS is the only proficiency score accepted by the Study Direct Stream (SDS) program. Additional country-specific requirements may also be applicable.

Meeting the minimum English requirements does not guarantee admission. Students with higher English proficiency scores will receive priority in the admission assessment process.

Course List

COM-3013: Professional Communications

This course is designed for international students with diplomas or degrees. It focuses on polishing communications skills acquired through one's academic career and workplace experience. Through various business writing and speaking scenarios, students learn Canadian business practices and communication styles. Close attention is paid to proper incorporation of the intellectual property of others to ensure academic integrity. Students will practice organized and dynamic speaking and will strive for polished business documents.

MKT-6113: Applications of Marketing Concepts

This course uses a case-study approach to introduce students to foundational concepts in the ever-changing marketing environment. Students analyze and solve common marketing challenges through the evaluation of real-world marketing case studies. Students examine the current marketing environment including concepts such as environmental scanning, segmentation, targeting and positioning, and marketing research. Students deepen their understanding of the marketing mix with analysis of product development and branding, pricing, distribution, and the many types of traditional and digital promotions. In addition to case analysis, students further develop their abilities to make informed marketing decisions through simulation exercises designed to emulate real-world scenarios faced by marketing managers.

MEC-1502: Canadian Workplace Health and Safety

In providing an overview of Canadian Labour laws, workplace rules and regulations, and Health and Safety Hazards in the workplace, students gain an understanding of the responsibilities of employers, worker's rights as well as the responsibilities of various organizations in the Canadian labour industry. Awareness and recognition of various health and safety risks arising from a variety of occupations is also covered.

BUS-1203: Workplace Communication Applications and Analysis

ACC-3083: Introduction to Managerial Accounting

The managerial accounting course provides students with skills to become highly effective in environments where quick decisions are required. Students learn to use financial information to make quick strategic decisions including how to use data to evaluate the effectiveness of current operations. Learning to maximize the profitability of operations, students prepare and interpret financial statements and key performance indicators that drive decision making. Topics covered in this course include cost management, analysis of financial performance, relevant costing techniques, budgetary planning and control for a business enterprise.

IHM-3003: Property and Building Administration

This course is designed to provide insight into the functions of management in the administration of large buildings and complexes. Topics will include the Residential Tenancies Act, lease negotiation, rent geared to income, breach of contract procedures, collection procedures, insurance and liability, management information systems, building start-up and take over, and marketing/advertising of rental units.

CCT-2042: Energy Efficiencies in Canadian Construction

This course will offer students an introduction to energy efficient building techniques, state of the art energy conserving systems and sustainable building approaches. Specific subject to be covered will include the basics of Heat Transfer, Building Envelope, Insulation Techniques, and New Technologies in electrical and heat generation.

QEM-1504: Total Quality Management

This course reviews the history and guiding principles of Total Quality Management (TQM) leading to an understanding of critical success factors for implementing total Quality Management. Students are introduced to the pioneering quality philosophies of Crosby, Deming, Ishikawa and Juran. Areas covered include developing an organizational culture for quality, quality strategy, employee involvement, data analysis and effective communication for implementing TQM in manufacturing or service industries.

MAN-6043: Leadership in Change Management

One of the few constants in today's competitive business environment is change. Change leaders must have knowledge of what drives successful change, what challenges successful change, the options available, the ethical issues associated with change, and understand organizational theory and behaviour and its impact. Effective Leaders must identify the correct approach to leading transition within an organization, utilize skills required to lead in chaotic and fast-paced environments, optimize organizational structures, analyze and assess change effectiveness, and ready their organizations to thrive. This course explores these knowledge areas and provides opportunity to practice and develop leadership skills relevant for successful change management.

ADR-1003: Alternative Dispute Resolution

This course introduces students to methods of dealing with conflict in the workplace. Students will examine different strategies for resolving workplace conflict, including the importance of effective communication. In addition, students will study various negotiation and mediation techniques.

IHM-3053: Tenancy Law in Ontario

This course intends to introduce the student to the law of residential tenancies governing landlords and tenants in Ontario. The course is designed to give the student a firm understanding of the basic legal principles articulated in the legislation. It will also focus on the practice and procedures of the Landlord and Tenant Board. The student will gain practical hands-on experience ranging from filing and serving legal documents to advocacy skills.

IHM-3013: Building Maintenance for Property Managers

This course aims to provide an understanding of maintenance management services for those involved in the property management sector or a related field. It will give a general overview of management systems, such as the principles of residential construction, building science(s), specification writing, management's responsibility for managing life safety systems, contract management, and the impact of various legislative requirements.

JSS-1001: Job Search and Success

This course is designed to give the student an understanding of how to conduct a job search and how to succeed in the work place. This includes self-reflection, effectively designing a cover letter and resume, online job searches utilizing social media, behavioural based interviewing as well as marketing oneself effectively in a job interview. Job safety, successful work strategies and harassment and discrimination plan of action is also discussed.

Academic Break

MKT-1103: Social Media Marketing

This course explores online marketing tools and tactics, such as social media, email, digital advertising and content marketing, that businesses can use to build a profitable relationship with their customers. Students engage in simulated social media, email and digital advertising campaigns to gain a better understanding of how to use these tools in their marketing efforts. Along with learning about digital and social media marketing, students learn general principles of marketing that are key for every business, regardless of industry or size: identifying who your customers are; understanding what needs they have that you are uniquely able to serve; creating a brand voice that speaks to them; identifying who your competitors are; deciding how to differentiate your offering from theirs; and creating a plan for engaging customers across social media and digital advertising platforms.

IHM-3023: Strategic and Financial Planning for Property Management

This course is designed to provide a complete review of the accounting process and managerial principles of accounting and financial statements. Course content includes financial statement analysis, and budget preparation procedures for property managers. In addition, the techniques and approaches for establishing and organizing objectives and implementing strategies will be discussed.

MAN-2103: Project Management

This course will provide the student with an overview of the structured processes and knowledge areas of project management within the context of organizations. It will contrast the differences between operational management and project management. It will provide the student with numerous tools and techniques used to initiate, plan, execute, monitor and control, and close a project. Students learn the vocabulary, definitions, principles and concepts of project management and working in a project team.

SCU-1603: Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship

FUNdamentals of Entrepreneurship is a gamified business simulation where students assume the role of an entrepreneur pursuing their passion of selling clothing online and in their retail store. The player subcribes to the guidance of a business coach and will build a successful venture in a virtual neighbourhood. The player can upgrade their store and operations by completed learning modules and testing. Through self-paced gameplay, students learn important concepts from Finance, Human Resources, Marketing, Health and Safety, Risk Management and more. In the process, they acquire the skills to effectively run a company as they upgrade their operation by completing learning modules and quizzes. Each student has a unique playing experience via ingame customizations, such as avatar creation, and store design. All content is contained within the game - no textbook is required. Students who have successfully completed MAN-1183 are not eligible to take this course.

IHM-3043: Human Relations for Property Managers

Property Managers must develop analytical and behavioural skills related to the supervision of employees. In addition, they must also interact with tenants, owners, contractors, and the general public. Topics will include decision-making, leadership, delegation, team building, motivation, performance coaching, evaluation, discipline, personnel procedures, recruitment, public relations, client/tenant services, owner/board liaison, and business ethics.

FPM-3003: Property Maintenance and Repairs

This course will introduce the learner to various property management maintenance and repairs skills. Students will gain hands-on experience in providing maintenance on a monthly or annual basis using various skills.  Learning these skills will enable students to reduce some of their business costs as property managers.  Learners should be prepared to complete hands-on activities throughout this course.

CPL-1049: Work Term - Full-Time *

Co-operative education provides students with the opportunity to apply classroom learning to the workplace, undertake career sampling and gain valuable work experience that may assist students in leveraging employment after graduation. CPL-5559: WIL Project

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Project is aimed at enriching students by connecting different program areas of study, cutting across subject-matter lines, and emphasizing unifying concepts. The focus of the WIL Project is to make connections between study and industry by engaging students in relevant and meaningful activities that are connected to and practiced within the professional workplace. WIL Project allows students to enhance and strengthen their employability prospects post-graduation by fine tuning skills and knowledge and meeting the expectations of today's employers. Students are required to attend the scheduled shifts in the WIL office, reporting to the WIL Supervisor. Weekly real-world challenges are presented in the WIL office, designed by industry professionals. In addition to the weekly assigned deliverables, students are also offered professional development sessions, and exposed to industry guest speakers, enhancing their opportunity to develop their professional network.

*In order to be eligible to participate in a full-time Co-op Work Term (CPL-1049) students must have a GPA of 2.8 or greater. Failing to do so will require the students to enroll in CPL-5559 WIL Project at an additional cost to the student. See the Costs tab for current fees.
