Each student in the Lambton College Photography program must purchase a laptop computer, certain software packages and a digital SLR camera. These tools should be considered an investment for the future, since nearly all photography jobs require this equipment.

The student must have a DSLR camera that includes a manual mode, as well as a video capability. (If the camera does not have video capability of a minimum 10 minutes, the student must also acquire a video recorder.)

The college will have a collection of specialty lenses that students are encouraged to borrow. It is recommended that students consider one of the following models. The recommendations below are as of April 2016. Check with the program co-ordinator if more recent models are available.

  1. Nikon D610 with 24-85 mm lens
Available locally for about $2,200. This is the lowest priced professional camera offered by Nikon. A student could easily transition into a professional career with this camera.
  2. Nikon D7200 with 18-55 mm lens
Available for $1,600 locally. This is a lower end professional camera, and will get the student started on their career. If the budget allows it, this will be the most economical purchase over the long run.
  3. Nikon D5600 with 18-55 mm lens
This is the lower end of the recommended Nikons. We warn that students who bought the low-end camera previously (the D3100) were not happy and most upgraded within a year. You can buy these locally for about $1,000.
  4. Canon EOS 6D with 24-105 mm lens
  5. Canon EOS 77D with 18-135 mm lens
  6. Canon EOS Rebel T71 with 18-55 mm lens

Students must have their camera by the first day of classes.

The college requires students have a Macbook Pro. This computer is needed for each class session, and most labs. Significant parts of the curriculum will be delivered online, through the Internet.

A minimum 15 inch full colour display is suggested, along with a 3.0 Ghz or faster processor. The hard disk should be 500GB or larger. A mouse is recommended. We highly recommend 8GB of RAM, although 4GB is acceptable.

There are currently four Macbook Pro models that qualify. These include:

  1. 13 inch 2.3 GHz
Available from Apple for $1979. This is the minimum machine acceptable.
  2. 15 inch 2.5 GHz
    Available from Apple for $2499.
  3. 13 inch Retina 2.7 GHz
These machines have two main differences. A retina display is double resolution, making the 13-inch Retina model high resolution. As well, the machines come with flash memory, rather than hard drives. A minimum of 1 TB flash drive is required. Available from Apple for $1550 in this configuration.
  4. 15 inch Retina 2.5 GHz
This machine has a larger monitor, as well as the higher retina resolution which enables the student to see more of a picture or page on the screen, or to have multiple screens open at once. Highly recommended. The additional RAM is also recommended. Available from Apple for $2450 in this configuration
  5. Ideally students should get their computer in advance of the first course. Education prices are only discounted $100 from normal, so you may want to forgo the discount and be able to spend several weeks getting familiar with your computer.

PC Laptop Models:

  1. Dell XPS 15
    CPU: Intel Core i5-7300HG - i7-7700HQ
    RAM: 8GB - 16GB
    Storage: 512GB
  2. Huawei Matebook X Pro
    CPU: 8th generation Intel Core i5 - i7
    RAM: 8GB - 16GB
    Storage: 512GB

With software, do not purchase before enrolling in the program. Usually your letter of acceptance into the program will allow you to purchase Educational versions. The price difference is significant compared to normal prices.

  1. Adobe CC Master Collection - Creative Cloud Student pricing for Creative Cloud is currently $19.99 month.

Students should buy at least two memory cards for their camera (16 GB minimum at $50 each) and we suggest 1 TB ($50 - $250) external hard drive for their computer.
