Performance Analysis and Optimization of Structural Tech's Novel Single Axis Solar Tracker System (Cancelled)

Structural Tech Corporation

Challenge/Opportunity:

Structural Tech has developed a novel single axis solar tracker technology. The 10kW pilot system is proven to be superior in generating power with lower associated costs compared to the commercial technologies. However, the developed system require improvement before moving to the commercialization phase. Structural Tech and the research team at LERC will work together to:

  • Design and integrate an advanced control systems with embedded optimal operation methodology to enhance the efficiency.
  • Develop and test a modular system for simpler scalability.
  • Develop mechanical and electrical computer model to evaluate various designs and optimize the operating parameters.
  • Design and test a ground anchoring system to reduce installation time and cost.

Solution/Collaboration:

It is expected that optimized technology will be ready for commercialization by 2017. This project provides a new and improved single axis tracker to compete with both fixed racking systems with improved efficiency and dual axis tracker with lower investment cost. The new tracker will be marketed as a standard product and be available for immediate purchase with quick install. The outcomes of this project will be beneficial to the organization as it will make them more competitive against older less efficient technologies, create manufacturing and installation and operation jobs, create new revenue stream, and help Structural’s future as a cutting edge renewable energy company. This project will demonstrate that an efficient and competitive product is available domestically, through educational collaboration and First Nation ownership and workmanship.
