Design, Fabrication and Optimization of a Novel Aluminum-Air Battery

Challenge/Opportunity:

Integration of renewables such as wind and solar power into the electrical grid and utilization of rechargeable batteries in hybrid and fully electric vehicles have underlined the importance of affordable, high-performance, and reliable energy storage systems. Lithium-ion batteries have become the candidate of choice for many applications, but they suffer from safety issues and high cost, making them unattractive for large-scale grid-tied energy storage systems. As a result, the search for alternative metal-air batteries has experienced a marked increase since the turn of the 21st century.

Solution/Collaboration:

Sheer Tech has already developed and optimized the anode and electrolyte of their new Al-air battery; the primary aim of the proposed applied research project is to synthesize, characterize and optimize a durable, affordable and high-performance cathode.
