Development of Roll Tracking Automated System to Optimize Maintenance and Operations

There is currently no commercial technology for real-time tracking of work rolls in steel mills. According to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), “steel products and inputs are not being comprehensively or securely traced with modern digital systems. Access to information related to the steel supply chain is also worsened by a lack of a standardized information-sharing mechanism which can result in delays in acquiring relevant data impacting government operations and steel business profitability”.

The objective of this project is to develop a work roll tracking system which can be automated to minimize errors in work roll identification through the use of RFID tags. The results will provide a near real-time location-aware feature for every work roll on the premises and maintain the history of the work roll in a central repository.
