Primary Responsibilities:

As a valued member of the team, the Cook demonstrates a commitment to resident safety by providing quality care in accordance with organization’s vision and mission.
Reporting to the Chef, the Cook is accountable to manage basic aspects of food production, plate presentation and hospitality style dining to meet the dining needs of the residents in accordance with legislative requirements and organization standards.
The Cook is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with the core values, ensure resident safety, and demonstrate customer service excellence.
 Based on menus, sets up equipment and supplies for food preparation. Prepares food following standardized recipes. Provides for prescribed diets, at appropriate temperatures and in portion controlled quantities;
 Inspect food preparation and serving areas to ensure observance of safe, sanitary food-handling practices;
 Completes all necessary documentation (food and refrigeration temperatures, dishwashing machine temperatures if applicable, menu changes) as assigned;
 Monitors quality of food supplies received and advises Chef of problems. Reports food, supply, and equipment needs to the Chef;
 Alerts Chef to problems and makes recommendations about corrective action. Assists with maintaining the security of the department;
 Participates actively in department's Quality Management program and any department/facility committees as requested;
 Complies with all provincial regulations, established food and beverage department policies and procedures and ORCA standards to ensure the department is tour ready;
 Attends department and facility team member meetings, in-services and other required training sessions;
 Assists in the orientation and training of new food and beverage team members.
 Attends in-service meetings;
 In the absence of the Chef and Food & Beverage Manager, assumes responsibility for departmental operations including menu changes as necessary, requisitions and purchases food and other supplies from authorized suppliers;
 Advises supervisor or designate immediately of all team member incidents that may result in an Occupational Accident Claim, any concerns with the physical plant, incidents or injuries and completes required reports;
 Follows all health and safety policies and procedures. Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, co-workers, and residents;
 Wears personal protective equipment as designated;
 Maintains a clean, safe environment for residents utilizing infection control principles;
 Maintains a sound working knowledge of their role & responsibilities during all Emergency situations when working different shifts;

 Participates in drills to prepare for emergencies and attends all education sessions in relation to emergency preparedness;
 Work in accordance with the organization’s Health and Safety Policies and Procedures and in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act;
 Perform other duties as required.


Experience Required:

 Minimum one year experience in volume food preparation, catering and special event preparation in the hospitality or Retirement home industry;
 Must be sensitive to the dietary needs of seniors;
 Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel an asset;
 Must be physically able to lift and transfer heavy, hot items and stand for majority of shift;
 Demonstrates a positive attitude necessary to meet the goals and standards of the home;
 Effective verbal and written English communication skills required

 Minimum Grade 12.
 Must have a valid Safe Food Handling Certificate, Smart Serve Certificate an asset.
