SARNIA, June 13, 2017 – On Wednesday, April 5, 2017, Lambton College celebrated its 50th Anniversary by taking part in a county-wide Legacy Project.

The commemorative day started with a Sunrise Ceremony led by local Aboriginal elders. Following the Ceremony, Lambton College students, faculty, staff and friends formed into teams and boarded buses heading out to various locations across Lambton County to take part in the installation of the 50th Anniversary Legacy Project.

The highly-anticipated Legacy Project saw a grove of 50 birch trees planted in Sarnia with additional installations extending to all 10 municipalities of Lambton County.

In total, 150 trees were planted across the community, honouring both the 50th Anniversary of Lambton College and the 150th birthday of Canada.

In conjunction with the main Legacy Project, an additional 18 individual community projects also took place throughout the community that day. These projects were carefully planned by individual Lambton College departments who wanted to give back to the community in a unique way.

Following the morning projects, participants were welcomed back to the Lambton College campus for an afternoon of celebration, which featured a choreographed performance from the College’s international students.

Former College Presidents, faculty and staff also made appearances as part of the festivities, and the items from a time capsule, originally placed on June 4, 1970, were unveiled. Special anniversary messages, filmed earlier in the morning, from Lambton College campuses/sites in China, Toronto and Mississauga were also received by the audience.

To cap off the celebration, guests of the event were treated to a digital fireworks display.

Following the festivities, Lambton College President & CEO Judith Morris noted that the day was much more than a celebration of the College’s 50th Anniversary, but a celebration of the amazing relationship that has been built between the College and the City of Sarnia and the County of Lambton over the past five decades.

As a further reflection of the day, and a thank you to the community, Lambton College wanted to share the following video of the Legacy Day celebrations: .

“We would not be the community college we are today without our community. So the intention of the Legacy Project was to really say thank you,” Morris is heard saying in the video. “Thank you for your support today, for yesterday and in the future. And we hope and expect that the future will be so much brighter with the community working together with the College.”
