SARNIA, August 14, 2017 – Like most adults balancing a career and a young family, Alicia knew that her busy lifestyle would make going back to school a challenge. A graduate of Lambton College’s Practical Nursing program, Alicia longed to upgrade her skills, but given both her lack of time and proximity to the College’s Sarnia campus, she wondered if her goals were achievable.

Trying to balance life as a mother, a nurse, and the wife of a farmer, Alicia says previous attempts at online courses weren’t good experiences. She felt the programs lacked personal support and left her feeling like she was just another student number logging in.

That all changed when she enrolled in Lambton College’s Registered Practical Nurse - Perioperative program. The program, offered completely online, consists of theoretical and lab components, a transition to practice course, and 210 hours of clinical practicum in a perioperative setting. More importantly, the program offered a level of personal support she hadn’t received in previous courses.

“I felt like a real person because there was somebody I could contact whenever I needed help,” Alicia recalls.

Because time management was of the utmost importance, she also felt that the online component was invaluable to her success.

“As a busy professional and a working mom, I really don't have the extra time for driving and commuting,” she explains. “That makes it challenging to fit education into my schedule, but the personal attention I received from the people in the Online and Continuing Education department has made it a lot easier.”

Despite the fact that her program is completely online, Alicia says she has never felt disconnected during her studies, a factor that has contributed to her success in the program.

“I would recommend online learning at Lambton College to everyone who's trying to fit education into a busy lifestyle,” she says

If Lambton College’s flexible online courses can work for someone as busy as Alicia, they can work for others who struggle balancing their own busy lifestyles.
