Lambton Lions Men’s Varsity Basketball Coach Achieves 100th Career Win

November 12, 2018

SARNIA, November 12, 2018 –The varsity stars continue to shine at Lambton College.

Less than a month after officially opening their brand new 1,240 seat gymnasium, James Grant, head coach of the College’s Men’s Varsity basketball team achieved his 100th career win.

The milestone victory happened on home court this past Saturday as the Lions defeated the Sault College Cougars 104 – 42.

The win came as Grant heads into his eighth season as head coach, making him the first coach in the history of Lambton College to reach the 100 win landmark. Grant’s first game – and win – as head coach in the OCAA came on November 2, 2011 when he coached the Lions to a 70-67 win over the St. Clair Saints.

Grant joined the Men’s Basketball program at Lambton College in 2008 where he served as assistant coach under the leadership of Head Coach Andrew Westlake. Following Westlake’s departure, Grant moved into the head coach role for the 2011/12 basketball season.

Under his guidance, the Lions continued to excel in the OCAA circuit. In the 2014/15 season, the team achieved a 10-8 record, resulting in the first winning record for the program in 13 seasons.

The following season culminated in a 13-5 record, a playoff win, and a trip to the OCAA Provincial Competition.

That same season also saw the Lions climb to their highest provincial and national position in the College’s history with a #3 ranking in the OCAA and a #6 ranking in the National CCAA poll.

In 2016, the Lions brought home their first ever OCAA Division One Basketball medal with a 100-78 win over the Sheridan Bruins in the bronze medal game.

Grant, a Sarnia resident, began his basketball coaching career in 2002 with the Irish Basketball Club. He went on to coach one year of high school basketball at Sarnia Collegiate in 2007 before taking on the assistant coach role with Lambton College in 2008.

Grant is currently the Manager of the Students’ Administrative Council (SAC) at Lambton College, where he has served since 2013.

“Our sincere congratulations goes out to James on behalf of all of us at Lambton College. Achieving his 100th win as a head coach is a tremendous accomplishment, and is a true reflection of James’ dedication and contribution to the Men’s Basketball Program, and to all of the students at our College. We look forward to cheering on our Lambton Lions in the season ahead!” said Rob Kardas, Vice President, Student Success & Campus Services.

“It’s an achievement I’m really proud of, and being able to celebrate something like that in our brand new facility, in front of our fans, really made it that much more exciting. The basketball program at Lambton College has always had so much support, and I’d just like to thank everyone who has contributed to our success throughout the years, our players, coaches, staff, and the many others who have helped us get to where we are today,” said James Grant, Head Coach, Lambton Lions Men’s Basketball team.

The Women’s Varsity Basketball team also shared in the weekend celebrations, taking home their own pair of victories against Sault College, with a 69-39 win on Saturday, and a 63-55 win on Sunday.

Both the Men’s and Women’s Lions are back in action this Friday, November 16, when they host the Niagara College Knights. The women tip off at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m. Lambton will also host the Mohawk College Mountaineers on Saturday, November 17 with game times set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. All Lions home games are free to attend and community fans are welcome to cheer on the home team in the new Athletics & Fitness Complex.
