Lambton College Works with Bluewater Health to Offer New Occupational and Physiotherapy Program

SARNIA, December 10, 2018 - A new program being launched at Lambton College in 2019 is already receiving widespread attention from local health professionals and prospective students.

The new Occupational Therapist Assistant & Physiotherapist Assistant program, developed in collaboration with Bluewater Health, offers a unique curriculum designed to engage students as they learn how to assist clients to achieve their health goals.

Students enrolled in the two-year diploma program will train in a brand new lab in the College's soon-to-be-opened NOVA Chemicals Health & Research Centre. The lab, built specifically for the new program, will be outfitted with equipment that is currently used in the field.

Additionally, students in the program will develop interdisciplinary skills resulting in the ability to work with both professions as they focus their studies on both occupational therapy and physiotherapy education. Like all of Lambton College's Health Sciences programs, the integration of in-class studies with hands-on experience will be accomplished through experiential learning opportunities and practice in a range of clinical settings.

“Lambton College has tremendous expertise in Health Sciences programming and our new Occupational Therapist Assistant & Physiotherapist Assistant program utilizes the strengths in both curriculum and world-class facilities,” says Mary Jane Comiskey, Dean, School of Health, Community Services & Creative Design at Lambton College. “This program was carefully designed in collaboration with occupational therapy and physiotherapy professionals at Bluewater Health, and students entering this program will be trained in one of the most advanced training labs in the province.”

Comiskey says the successful development of the program is a direct result of College collaboration with community partners like Bluewater Health, and local subject matter experts.

“The partnership between Lambton College and Bluewater Health is an important one. This new offering is a testament to what can be accomplished with engaged, collaborative partners, who are experts in their field. We look forward to welcoming Occupational Therapist Assistant & Physiotherapist Assistant students into the hospital for their practical work experience,” says Paula Gilmore, Director, Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation Therapy Services, Stroke/Vascular & Dialysis, Bluewater Health.
