Lambton College to Mandate Vaccinations for Varsity Athletes and Students Living in Residence

Lambton College is excited and ready to welcome more students back to campus in September.

In alignment with public health guidelines, and as vaccination plans progress, Lambton will continue to make safety a priority as the College increases student access to the campus and other aspects of student life including varsity sports.

A high rate of COVID-19 vaccination also plays an important role in Lambton’s plan to offer a more robust academic and student life experience come September.

As plans to reopen the campus progress, Lambton continues to evaluate how to best ensure a return to learning that remains safe for students, employees, and other members of the College community. With the health and safety of everyone in mind, and to ensure this year’s cohort can be absorbed with the best possible student experience, Lambton College has decided to make vaccinations for varsity athletes and Residence students mandatory for September 2021.

All varsity student athletes as well as students who are planning to live in Residence or who are currently on the waitlist, will receive additional communications via email outlining vaccine requirements for September.

Currently, the following plans have been put in place for those living in Residence:

  • Residence students will now be required to provide proof of at least a first dose of their vaccine prior to August 30, 2021. Proof of a second dose must be provided by October 15, 2021. Students will be required to submit documentation via online upload as part of the application process.
  • Those who do not have their second dose of an approved vaccine by October 15, 2021 will be required to move out of Residence. Fees will be refunded on a prorated basis.
  • Students who do not wish to comply with this regulation will receive a refund of any Residence fees paid to date.
  • Exemptions will be allowed on medical or other protected grounds under the Ontario Human Rights Code and a documentation process is currently being put in place for this. Lambton College Residence staff will communicate with students about the outcomes of exemption requests and options available. Approved exemptions may impose restrictions on access, activities or room occupancy. Please email info@lambtonresidence.ca if you require documentation.

Students in Residence live closely with many others, and thus are at higher risk of transmission of the COVID-19 virus. By ensuring Residence students are vaccinated, Lambton College can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and create a safer and more interactive space for everyone.

The following plans have been put in place for student athletes:

  • All varsity athletes are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to participate in indoor or outdoor athletics activities. Students will be required to obtain a first dose by September 7 (official tryouts) and a second dose by first date of intercollegiate competition (varies by sport).
  • Exemptions will be allowed on medical or other protected grounds under the Ontario Human Rights Code and a documentation process has been put in place for this. Approved exemptions may impose restrictions including travel and accommodation sharing. Email james.grant@lambtoncollege.ca for the documentation needed to be considered for an exemption.
  • Athletes who do not have an approved exemption and do not wish to be vaccinated against COVID-19 will not be permitted to participate in varsity athletics.

At this time, the College will not be extending a vaccine mandate to any other student or employee groups. Lambton continues to monitor the public health situation as the Fall Term approaches, and any changes to health and safety or vaccine policies will be communicated promptly.

Lambton continues to encourage all employees and students to become vaccinated against COVID-19. To further support the College community in doing so, Lambton will also be hosting vaccination clinics on campus in September in collaboration with Lambton Public Health.

The student life experience at Lambton College is second to none, and safely getting students back on campus, in class and involved in Athletics programs is a huge priority. These mandates will help safeguard a return to campus and a return to the student experience for which Lambton College has become known.
