Lambton College Partner, Genecis Bioindustries Inc., Receives Provincial Award for Collaborative Project

SARNIA, October 27, 2022 – A collaborative research project involving Lambton College’s Research & Innovation department has received a provincial award on behalf of the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI).

The Mind to Market Award was presented to College partner Genecis Bioindustries Inc., recognizing the success of a collaborative project with Lambton College. The coveted award was announced during OCI’s Annual General Meeting, which took place Wednesday, October 26.

Genecis is a biotechnology company that converts food waste into biodegradable plastics and other high value materials. The company has completed food waste to PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate) conversion technology, which involves using mixed organic feedstock with Genecis proprietary bacteria. This was significant as there is not commercialized technology in the world that can currently produce PHAs from non-union sugar sources like organic waste.

Genecis partnered with Lambton College on a collaborative project focused on the adjustment of %HV and its effect on material properties and processability with an overall goal to create a patentable new biodegradable and fully compostable grade of plastic resign material for large scale production.

“Lambton would like to extend its congratulations to our partner Genecis Bioindustries Inc. on their Mind to Market Award from OCI,” said Dr. Mehdi Sheikhzadeh, Vice President, Research & Innovation, Lambton College. “This is an incredible honour for Genecis and confirmation of their innovative work and dedication to changing the plastic industry. Lambton College is thrilled to be part of this project and the advances it has brought to not only Genecis as a company, but to our economy as well.”

The Mind to Market Award celebrates the best of OCI supported R&D collaborations between industry and research communities that results in commercialization of Ontario-based innovative solutions. It celebrates the success that occurs when the best and brightest in industry and academia collaborate on critical issues.

Funded by the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, OCI brings together industry, academic and government partners to invest in collaborative Research & Development (R&D), technology development, and commercialization opportunities that generate the highest return on innovation for Ontarians.
