Issue Date:
August 30, 2011
Supersedes Date:
September 12, 1988

Upon request, the college will provide a copy of this policy in an alternate format.

Hepatitis 'B' is an inflamation of the liver caused by the Hepatitis 'B' Virus (HBV). This infection can cause serious, acute and chronic disease for which there is no effective treatment. HBV is carried in blood, saliva and semen and gains entry to the body through minute breads in mucus membranes. The virus is also carried into the body in blood transfusion and blood contaminated instruments.

Policy

The college considers all students and staff in the following programs/areas to be at above average risk of exposure to the virus: Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology, Early childhood Education, Day care Centre, Health Centre.

Therefore, all students and staff in these programs are encouraged to have the vaccination against HBV prior to potential contact.

Where the cost is not covered under the employee’s Health Plan, the College will provide the vaccination free of charge to all regular (full-time and part-time) employees in the areas mentioned. If the cost is partially covered the College will pay the difference.

Procedure

Employees who qualify as above and wish to receive the vaccination should contact the Health Centre for arrangements.

Students are expected to advise the Health Centre once they have completed their own arrangements for vaccination, or if they wish assistance in making arrangements.

The College Nurse will determine whether or not a staff member or a student should be advised to receive the vaccination. The Health Centre will maintain the records of vaccination.
