Policy

A full-time employee of the College may be granted developmental leave to engage in an outside program of study or work from which benefits to the College will be derived in relation to its goals and objectives and which will provide professional and personal development for the individual. Categories of developmental leave:

  1. Professional Developmental (Sabbatical) Leave as per the Collective Agreements for Academic and Support Staff and the Terms and Conditions of Employment for Administrative Staff;
  2. Exchange with personnel in other colleges, industry, business or government;

Procedure

  1. Employees applying for developmental leave must complete a Leave Application Form with supporting documentation and send one copy to their supervisor and one copy to the Director of Development. Applications for leave must be received at least six (6) months prior to the commencement date.
  2. The program of study or work proposed to be followed during the developmental leave must be fully described in the application. In particular, it must be shown how the objectives of the leave relate to specific College goals.
  3. When a leave application leading to a degree is submitted, it should include:
    1. A list (transcripts) of subjects previously taken towards the degree and a list of subjects that will be taken to compete the degree.
    2. A letter of acceptance from an institution and a statement that the candidate would be able to fulfill the degree requirements in the time period requested.
  4. At the conclusion of the leave, the individual must submit a written report to his/her supervisor and the Director of Development.
  5. Applications for leave must be for a period of one year or less.
  6. The criteria to be used in assessing applications are as follows:
    1. What are the immediate benefits to the College in relation to its goals and objectives as a result of the leave? What are the longer range benefits?
    2. What is the breadth of applicability across the College of the objectives of the leave?
    3. What is the recommendation of the applicant's supervisor regarding the benefits to the individual and to the College of the proposed leave program?
    4. How will the leave contribute to the personal growth of the individual?
  7. Total years of service to the College of an applicant will be taken into account when applications for leave are considered.
  8. Recommendations regarding applications for leave will be made to the appropriate member of the College Executive Committee by the supervisor and the Director of Development.Apart from other criteria to be used in assessing applications, consideration of any application is contingent upon a suitable substitute being available. This decision will be the responsibility of the supervisor.
  9. The Executive Committee will approve all applications for leave. All applicants for developmental leave will be notified in writing by the appropriate member of the College Executive Committee as to the disposition of their applications.
  10. For faculty, granting of leaves shall be subject to the Collective Agreement between the Ontario Council of Regents for Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology and the Ontario Public Service Employees' Union (for Academic Employees); for administration, the Terms and Conditions of Employment for Administrative Staff, which are in effect at the time of the application for leave and for Support Staff, the Collective Agreement between the Ontario Council of Regents and the Ontario Public Service Employees' Union (for Support Staff Employees).
