Hairstylist

Hairstyling is a great career because it allows you to express your creativity and work with clients to help them look and feel their best. It also provides opportunities for growth and entrepreneurship, as hairstylists can open their own salons or specialize in specific areas of the field.
The Lambton College program is offered over three consecutive terms, and provides students with a two-year Ontario College Diploma delivered in only 12 months.
Students spend the majority of their time practicing their skill sin the on-site salon which is also where the college's Esthetician students study.
Hairstyling is a registered trade and this program provides students with 1,500 hours of hairstyling education. This includes 510 hours of hairstyling theory, and 990 hours of practice in hair cutting, styling, colouring and lightening, permanent waving, chemical relaxing, and hair additions and trends. Students will also have the opportunity to study three general education courses.

Admission Requirements
O.S.S.D. or equivalent with:
- Grade 12 English C or U
Mature Student Assessment for this program is available in the subject of English for the purpose of demonstrating proficiency in this required admission subject. For all other admission requirements, applicants must complete the required course(s) as listed above. For more information, please contact counselling@lambtoncollege.ca. Academic admission requirements can be obtained through Academic Upgrading and the Pre-Programs at Lambton College.
Apprenticeship Qualifications
At any point, students may be eligible to register as an apprentice with an employer sponsor to complete 2,000 hours of in-salon apprenticeship hours. Apprentices may register by contacting their local brand of the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training & Skills Development. The total hours for an apprenticeship in the Hairstyling trade (332A) are 3,500.
Once both the in-school and the in-salon hours have been satisfied, graduates are able to qualify to write the provincial Certificate of Qualification Exam for an additional fee. Upon successful completion of this exam, the apprentice will become a fully licensed hairstylist in the province of Ontario.

Salon & Spa
Managing Day-to-Day Operations
Hairstyling students handle the business side of a salon as part of operating the Salon & Spa. They book appointments, ensure products are ordered, prepare supplies, and process payments.
Modern Equipment
Student have the opportunity to work with top quality tools from professional salon trusted brands.
Training for Trends
Students learn the basics of hairstyling along with current trends and styles to keep up with the ever-evolving industry.
Faculty
Students receive the chance to work closely with faculty that have a combined knowledge of over 40 years in the industry.
Courses
Permanent Waving
In this course students will perform a permanent wave using current and relevant methods according to hair type and style. They will analyze the hair, choose the correct wrapping technique and use the test curl method of verification.
Hair Cutting I
Through this course, the learner gains basic knowledge and the ability to cut and to style hair to the desired shape to meet client expectations and specifications using a variety of cutting tools. The learner will also gain the knowledge and the ability to properly shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp. The learner gains knowledge to demonstrate safe working practices in the workplace as well as performing preventative maintenance and decontamination procedures adhering to regulation, workplace standards and policies.
Hair Colouring & Lightening I
Through this course, the learner gains the basic knowledge and ability to perform a colour treatment at a beginner level using various colouring products. The student is able to apply relevant knowledge and techniques of colour and lightening services to diffuse, replace and enhance natural and artificial pigmentation to meet the expected outcome, adhering to regulation and manufacturers specification.
Styling & Finishing Techniques I
A hairstylist's reputation can be made on their ability to style and finish hair well. This course introduces students to the techniques used to style wet and dry hair. Students will use a variety of styling tools and work with medium and long hair to create a range of hair styles.
Applied Salon Experience I
This course provides students the opportunity to practice on fellow students and perfect the skills they have acquired during this semester; in a professional spa setting. All facets of daily spa activities are introduced. Students are responsible for booking appointments, laundry, cleaning as well as performing services. Professionalism is stressed. Students learn and practice sterilization and sanitization procedures in accordance with Canada Health and Safety standards.
Salon & Spa Development I
In this online course, the challenges of successfully owning and/or operating a spa, salon or related business are introduced in this course. Emphasis is placed on communication, marketing strategies and professionalism. The importance of selling services and products and building positive client relationships are discussed.
Chemical Relaxing
In this course, students will chemically relax hair by selecting and applying relevant knowledge of, and skills with, chemical products and techniques in order to meet the needs and expectation of the client. They will analyze the hair, choose the correct strength of product and use the strand test method of verification.
Hair Cutting II
In this course, the learner will develop advanced knowledge and skill in the ability to cut and style hair using a variety of cutting tools to meet client specifications. In addition students will enhance their knowledge and skills to properly shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp. They will also add to their knowledge of safe working practices and demonstrate their knowledge by performing preventative maintenance and decontamination procedures by adhering to regulation, workplace standards and policies.
Hair Colouring & Lightening II
Through this course, the learner gains the knowledge and ability to perform colour treatments at an advanced level using various colouring products. The student is able to apply relevant knowledge and techniques of colour and lightening services to diffuse, replace and enhance natural and artificial pigmentation to meet the expected outcome, adhering to regulation and manufacturers specification.

In this course, the learner will develop advanced knowledge and skill in the techniques used to style wet and dry hair. Students will work with medium and long hair to create a range of hair styles. They will learn to use a variety of styling tools and techniques including blow drying, thermal styling, upstyling, finger methods, pin curls, braiding and finger waves.

In this course all facets of daily salon activities will be introduced. Students will work in a professional salon setting practicing, reinforcing and perfecting all the skills they have acquired. They will be responsible for booking appointments, interacting and consulting with clients. Students will maintain all aspects of the salon to the highest standards of cleanliness and practice sterilization and sanitation procedures in accordance with Canada Health and Safety standards.
Salon & Spa Development II
Building on the skills and knowledge presented in Salon and Spa Development I, students examine the challenges of success owning and/or operating a spa/salon or related business. Employee personalities and management are discussed. Students expand on promotions and marketing ideas. Emphasis is placed on communication, professionalism, business mathemetics and the details of how to create a business plan.
General Education Elective
Current Trends & Techniques
New Trends and Techniques introduces students to the world of hair additions, specialty styling and the needs of a wide array of clients. Students will build on all previous hairstyling classes and will hone their skills to prepare them for the studio.
Hair Cutting III
In this course, the learner will develop advanced knowledge and skill in the ability to cut and style hair using a variety of cutting tools to meet client specifications. In addition students will enhance their knowledge and skills to properly shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp. Employment Opportunities
Our graduates work in salons, spas or resorts as hairstylists, stage artists, colour technicians, salon managers or business owners. They are also successful as sales representatives or product educators for manufacturers, distributors and retailers of hairstyling products.

It is recommended that students purchase a laptop with a Windows operating system.
Internet Speed Requirements
For best performance for students learning remotely, an internet connection with a minimum of 40 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speed is recommended in order to effectively use video conferencing and remote lecture delivery software as well as, other online resources remotely. Due to the large area over which students may be dispersed, we are unable to recommend a specific provider, so you will need to inquire around your area to find one that best suits your needs.

In order to access the internet and virtually-delivered software and courseware, student laptops should include the following at a minimum. By meeting the following specifications, students will be equipped to access software and courseware on their laptop through the internet:

To ensure students are getting the most our of their classroom experience, some software will be required.
Lambton College has made this software easily accessible online. Students can leverage our Microsoft Office 365 software packages and services. In addition, much of the software you require for your courses will be available on demand for use on any device - on or off campus.
