Practical Nursing


Program Information

Lambton College’s experienced faculty deliver an exemplary practical nursing program with caring and enthusiasm. Individualized programming offers flexibility for student learning and enhanced student success. Advances in technology, evidence-informed practice and interprofessional teamwork are integrated throughout the program. 

Students within this program benefit from experiential learning opportunities working in both lab and clinical settings. Lambton College’s facilities include a state-of-the art Nursing Lab in the brand new NOVA Chemicals Health & Research Centre, which allows students to practice skills in a variety of nursing environments. Hospital and community placements help students to form a relationship with clients, and solidify their critical thinking skills and professional nursing practice.

Clinical experiences are provided in all terms of the program. Clinical locations include, but are not limited to, lab and simulation experiences, hospital and community settings such as long term care homes, family practice clinics and community nursing agencies. To meet the requirements for clinical placements, students must complete a program-specific Passport to Placement.

Program Approval

The Practical Nursing Diploma program at Lambton College is currently Approved (Category 1) by the College of Nurses of Ontario. Current graduates from this program are eligible to apply for registration as a Registered Practical Nurse in Ontario.

Admission Requirements

O.S.S.D. or equivalent with:
A minimum grade of 60% in the following:
Grade 12 English C or U
Grade 12 Mathematics C or U
Grade 11 or 12 Biology C or U
Grade 11 or 12 Chemistry C or U

Practical Nursing has a highly competitive admission standard. Students are ranked and accepted based on their academic averages.

Mature applicants must be at least 19 years of age by the start of classes, be out of secondary school for at least one year and usually do not have a high school diploma. Mature applicant assessment for this program is available in the Counselling Department in the subject of English. The assessment(s) will determine proficiency in required admission subjects. For all other admission requirements applicants must complete the required course(s) as listed above. For more information please contact the Counselling Department at ext. 3412. Academic admission requirements can be obtained through Academic Upgrading and Pre-Programs at Lambton College.

Registered practical nurses are an integral part of the interprofessional health care team. They provide care to individuals with a broad scope of health care needs within diverse working environments such as: hospitals, long-term care homes, community nursing agencies, public health units, private practice and clinics, industry settings and child care centres.
