SARNIA, June 18, 2026 – It was a celebration more than ten years in the making as Lambton College held the grand opening of its Indigenous Outdoor Space (IOS). The creation of a permanent, culturally prominent, and welcoming space for Indigenous Peoples has long been a priority of the Indigenous Education Council, which is the governing body on Indigenous Education at Lambton College. The realization of that vision was celebrated Thursday in an event that brought together Indigenous community members, Elders, students, employees, donors, and partners.
The IOS is a purpose-built gathering place that is in alignment with the Indigenous Academic & Student Success Plan. It has been created to support Indigenous learners, Indigenous education programming, Indigenous-focused professional development to develop cultural competency, and building partnerships with Indigenous communities.
“This is one of the most meaningful days in the history of Lambton College,” said Rob Kardas, President & CEO, Lambton College. “The Indigenous Outdoor Space is a visible reminder that Indigenous culture belongs here, and it is a visible commitment that Indigenous learners and Indigenous community members belong here, too.”
During the celebration, Lambton College recognized members of the Indigenous Outdoor Space Steering Committee for their years of leadership and commitment to the project. The Steering Committee consisted of Indigenous students, Indigenous alumni, members of the Indigenous Education Council and Indigenous Education team at Lambton College, and an Elder and Knowledge Keeper.
“It was important for the Indigenous Outdoor Space Steering Committee to approach the land in our traditional ways with respect while sharing our intentions for the space, and we continue with this respectful relationship,” said Jane Manning, Director, Indigenous Education, Lambton College. “We were focused on the future possibilities of this space and how it can support Indigenous students in seeing themselves represented at the College, and the Indigenous Outdoor Space accomplishes that.”
Located at the south end of Lambton College's main campus, the Indigenous Outdoor Space design was overseen by ATRR and Red Quill and led by Wanda Dalla Costa, the first First Nations woman architect in Canada.
The Indigenous Outdoor Space supports Lambton College's ongoing commitment to Indigenous education and Truth and Reconciliation.
