Electric Vehicles Questions
- What is a zero-emission vehicle (ZEV)?
- A zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) is a vehicle that cannot produce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while operating. These emissions primarily would come out of a typical exhaust pipe. While some ZEVs have internal combustion engines that emit GHGs, they must also be able to operate without it.
- ZEVs are classified into three categories below:
- Battery-electric vehicles (EVs) - vehicles that run 100% off electricity
- Plug-in Hybrid Electric vehicles (PHEVs) - vehicles that run 50% off electricity and 50% off gas or diesel (i.e. has an internal combustion engine)
- 3. Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) - vehicles that run 100% off hydrogen which charges a battery that produces electricity.
- I own a zero-emission vehicle, will I be able to charge on campus?
- Yes. There are three level two EV charging stations on campus. Look for the Electric Vehicle Charging Station icon on the Parking Map.
- What kind of zero-emission vehicles will I be able to charge?
- The ChargePoint CT-4021 EV charging stations on campus are universal charging stations and as such are able to charge all EVs and PHEVs.
- How can I charge my zero-emission vehicle on campus?
- Follow these steps:
- Download the ChargePoint App from the App Store or Google Play
- Create a free ChargePoint Account
- Once an account is created, you will be able to view the charging rate of your vehicle through costs and battery charging levels
- Will I have to pay to use these stations?
- In time, Lambton College will charge each ZEV user that uses our EV stations on college property and we will do our best to charge the user a fair and justifiable rate. If payments are required, instructions will be on the ChargePoint app. If you do not have a credit card to use within the app, you can purchase a ChargePoint RFID card. This card can be used to activate the charging instead of your phone. Contact the ChargePoint technical support team at 1-800-758-4389 to issue you a card that will be mailed to your address.
- What happens if I am overcharged or undercharged for using an EV station?
- All issues related to payment can be directed to the ChargePoint technical support team at 1-800-758-4389.
- How long will it take to charge my vehicle?
- Depending on the make and model, a full charge from 0% to 100% will take on average eight hours if you vehicle runs 100% on electricity, contains a 60-kWh batter and a 7-kW charging port. The three stations on campus are ChargePoint CT-4021 and have a standard electrical output of 7.2 kw.
- Who is responsible for maintaining and protecting my personal information when using an EV charging station at Lambton College?
- All concerns relating to privacy, confidentiality, payment, functionality, reliability, etc. regarding using and operating an EV charging station on Lambton College premises is administered by ChargePoint. If your information is under threat of a security breach Lambton College will not be held liable for the loss or theft of such information. Lambton College will provide optimal support to ensure that each EV user using the ChargePoint APP to charge/pay for their vehicle on college property feels safe in doing so.
- What if the EV charging station that I want to connect to is vandalized or someone who is parked here is not using the charging station?
- For any physical damage witnessed on an EV charging station or the misuse of the college parking space please notify Facilities Management in room B0-152 at B building, email evcharging@lambtoncollege.ca. or dial 519-542-7751 x 3774. The parking policy will be updated to ensure that the parking spots assigned to each EV charging station are actively used. If these parking spaces are incorrectly used it is up to the discretion of Facilities Management and Parking Services to enforce appropriate measures for consideration.
- Are the parking spots with EV charging stations and/or signs labelled “ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING” only used for zero-emission vehicles?
- Yes. Anywhere that you see a green sign on campus that says: “ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING” and/or an EV charging station is specifically assigned for electric vehicles or plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles. Each vehicle parked in one of these spots will be required to use the assigned connector from the assigned EV charging station. All vehicles using these parking spots will be monitored and enforced by facilities management & parking services (as updated through its Parking Services (4000-4-2) policy). Plug-in or park elsewhere.
- Are there financial incentives to help me pay for my ZEV that I’m about to purchase?
- Yes. The Government of Canada has introduced the Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program in May 2019. These are incentives for both new and used ZEVs. Presently, one can claim up to $5,000.00 for the purchase of a new or used ZEV. For the complete list of cars available and incentives received please see the List of eligible vehicles under the iZEV Program.
- Another incentive program can be found through the Used Electric Vehicle Incentive program through Plug ‘N Drive, a non-profit organization that helps accelerate and encourage consumers to purchase and operate ZEVs. Here, Ontario drivers may qualify for $1,000.00 towards the purchase of a used fully electric vehicle.
- Please continue to monitor municipal and provincial government funding supports as well as other privately-run incentive programs that may offer additional support.
