Occupational Health Nurses provide health and safety services in workplaces, for both employers and employees. Lambton's Ontario College Graduate Certificate helps prepare RNs and RPNs for practice as an Occupational Health Nurse. The program covers areas such as ergonomics and disability management, health and safety management, health and safety legislation, and more.
This program is appropriate for both Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses planning to work toward the Canadian Nurses Association COHN-C certification as well as experienced Occupational Health Nurses looking to enhance their knowledge and skills.
Admission Requirements
- Ontario College Diploma, Ontario College Advanced Diploma, Degree or equivalent.
In addition, you must also possess:
- A Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
- A Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse

Prior Learning Assessment

Credential Eligibility
If you are taking courses with the intention of completing this program and earning a credential, you must meet the Admission Requirements. It is your responsibility to supply proof of admission requirements to the Office of the Registrar before completing three courses in this program.
If you complete the program but fail to provide proof of admission requirements, you will be ineligible to receive your credential.

Graduation Fees
Students who successfully complete all the academic requirements for this program should submit their intent to graduate in order to receive their credential. The graduate module can be completed on myLambton via Self Service.
A graduation fee of about $75 is added to your account upon verification that admission requirements have been met. For exact fees contact your Enrolment Services Professional.

This course will introduce you to the practice of occupational health nursing as well as the ethical, professional and legal issues and guidelines which form the basis of occupational health nursing practice. Students will acquire basic skills in the identification of health and safety hazards in the workplace as well as activities which promote employee health and safety.

Students will acquire an understanding of principles of adult learning and therapeutic relationships in order to develop, implement and evaluate health promotion and disease prevention programs and strategies in the workplace. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to promote employee wellness through identification, management and prevention of work-related stress and burnout, acquire skills to assist employees to cope with bereavement and loss, facilitate Employee Assistance Programs, and provide crisis intervention and critical incident response, defusing and debriefing.

Students will acquire the knowledge and skill to obtain a health history and perform a physical examination for various clients. Focus will be on the adult population and will include aspects of cultural compassion, aboriginal health, gender and sexual identity, interpersonal violence, and mental health. Health promotion strategies are integrated throughout the course and include an introduction to risk assessment in mental health, substance use, complex pain, and domestic violence.

This course will focus on recognition and understanding of the health effects of common hazardous chemical, physical and biological agents in the workplace using a systems and exposure approach. The medical/health surveillance related exposures will be addressed through health assessments, diagnoses and nursing interventions for the individual as well as the workplace. Students will also develop an understanding of principles of occupational hygiene which includes exposure monitoring and sampling techniques.

Occupational health nurses must understand relevant health and safety legislation in order to assist workplaces to comply with legislated requirements. Introduces health and safety legislation to assist you in the design and implementation of a health and safety program.

Learn to design, implement and evaluate an effective occupational health service and health and safety program incorporating evidence-based practice. Acquire or enhance professional writing skills and obtain and critique a research report.

Students will acquire an understanding of biomechanical and ergonomic principles and relate these to the pathophysiology of work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Students will be able to perform physical demands analyses, identify ergonomic risk factors and recommend workstation and/or task modification to prevent work-related injuries. Students will identify barriers to a return to work, and will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to design, implement and evaluate an effective disability management program.

The student will consolidate and utilize the content of prior Occupational Health Nursing courses in the development and implementation of a workplace project. The student will select and perform a project related to occupational health nursing practice.

Technology Requirements
It is required that students purchase a laptop with a Windows operating system.
Internet Speed Requirements
For best performance for students learning remotely, an internet connection with a minimum of 40 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speed is recommended in order to effectively use video conferencing and remote lecture delivery software as well as, other online resources remotely. Due to the large area over which students may be dispersed, we are unable to recommend a specific provider, so you will need to inquire around your area to find one that best suits your needs.

In order to access the internet and virtually-delivered software and courseware, student laptops should include the following at a minimum. By meeting the following specifications, students will be equipped to access software and courseware on their laptop through the internet:

To ensure students are getting the most our of their classroom experience, some software will be required.
Lambton College has made this software easily accessible online. Students can leverage our Microsoft Office 365 software packages and services. In addition, much of the software you require for your courses will be available on demand for use on any device - on or off campus.
