What is Service Learning?

Service learning integrates meaningful community service with classroom instruction and critical reflection. Students get the chance to practice what they’ve learned while making a positive impact. Through combining hands-on service with academic instruction and guided reflection, students:

  • Deepen their understanding of course material
  • Develop civic responsibility
  • Help strengthen the communities they serve

This approach helps students grow as learnings and as active members of society.

Benefits of Service Learning

  • Community Engagement: Make a tangible impact through service projects that address local community needs
  • Ethical Development: Foster a sense of social responsibility and ethical thinking
  • Applied Academics: Bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical community service
  • Reflective Practice: Enhance personal growth through critical reflection on service experiences

Police Foundations Placement

Eight Police Foundation students get the opportunity to be placed with the Sarnia Police Service, gaining hands-on experience while being mentored by a Sarnia Police officer. The students are exposed to the reality of investigating community-level street crime such as shoplifting and minor thefts. Approximately 200 hours of service learning is completed, which includes working directly in the field with officers, overseeing their work in evidence seizures, communicating with members of the public, and using technology and software for investigations.
