French for the Workplace is an online certificate program designed to help you improve your French language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Whether you need to meet French language requirements for work or you are looking to learn a new language for pleasure, this certificate will help you improve your French communication skills while developing a deeper appreciation of French culture.

After completing the five online courses in the French for the Workplace certificate, students will have covered content equivalent to level 8 for the Niveaux de Competence Linguistique Canadiens (NCLC), which are the national standards for describing, measuring and recognizing French language proficiency.

Please Note: students pursuing NCLC Level 8 for work are encouraged to inquire with their employer about whether additional language testing will be required to meet the employer's French language proficiency requirements.

Academic admission requirements can be obtained through Academic Upgrading and the Pre-Programs at Lambton College.

Credential Eligibility

If you are taking courses with the intention of completing this program and earning a credential, you must meet the Admission Requirements. It is your responsibility to supply proof of admission requirements to the Office of the Registrar before completing three courses in this program.

If you complete the program but fail to provide proof of admission requirements, you will be ineligible to receive your credential.

  • Exact costs can be obtained during the registration process. Visit the Course List and select an individual course for associated course fees.

Graduation Fees

  • Students who successfully complete all the academic requirements for this program should submit their intent to graduate in order to receive their credential. The graduate module can be completed on myLambton via Self Service.

    A graduation fee of about $75 is added to your account upon verification that admission requirements have been met. For exact fees contact your Enrolment Services Professional.

Textbooks

  • Textbook costs may be applicable to each course. Most textbooks can be purchased through textnet.ca, but some exceptions do apply. Some courses may have software or equipment requirements that are not included in the cost of the course and are the responsibility of the student. Please see individual course pages for course-specific textbook information.

This course is designed for people with little or no French knowledge. This course emphasizes new vocabulary and language conventions. Level one ensures the basis of learning effective strategies to communicate.

The student will sustain development of language skills by extending vocabulary with regard to all activities after work such as weekend chores, leisure, sports including holidaying abroad. The grammatical structures at this level continue to be simple. Through systematic exercises the student becomes more confident and moves on from level 1 present tense and near future to the past tense. The student at the end of this level will be able to share more extensively life at home as well as describe a real or imagined past holiday in a French speaking country.

Notes

The fee for the French course includes the cost of the CD that is used. The host college will forward the CDs to Lambton College at the withdrawal date of the semester. Please contact the Part-Time Studies office to arrange to pick-up your course CD.

The progressive acquisition, reinforcement, and creative use of language structures will give the student confidence to self-expression. By analyzing, comparing and applying the French past tenses, the student will have the basic tools to story telling. At this level, the student will be encouraged to express simple and complex sentence structures. Anecdotes by authors from French speaking Canada will serve as models for the final task.

Credit

In addition to a more rigorous approach to vocabulary and grammatical structures with every class the student will continue to develop everyday situations practiced at earlier levels. Grammatical sentence structures are more complex at this level with the expansion of the past, present, future and conditional verb tenses. Articles from French speaking Canada serve as language models and provide a cultural perspective on current issues. Towards the end of the course language skills include the ability to convey necessity, obligation, probability, and or expectation with regards to past experiences, work and education and the future.

Credit

This course will allow students to develop their writing and reading skills and write moderately complex texts related to their profession. They will become familiar with the characteristics of several technical and professional texts in order to produce them. They will learn reading and writing strategies and use digital tools to improve their writing skills. They will also develop their reading comprehension skills. Learners will become competent readers and writers so that they can make use of their bilingualism in the labour market now and in the future. The student may reach level 8 of the CLB / NCLC Benchmark.

Technology Requirements

It is required that students purchase a laptop with a Windows operating system.

Internet Speed Requirements

For best performance for students learning remotely, an internet connection with a minimum of 40 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speed is recommended in order to effectively use video conferencing and remote lecture delivery software as well as, other online resources remotely. Due to the large area over which students may be dispersed, we are unable to recommend a specific provider, so you will need to inquire around your area to find one that best suits your needs.

Minimum Laptop Requirements

In order to access the internet and virtually-delivered software and courseware, student laptops should include the following at a minimum. By meeting the following specifications, students will be equipped to access software and courseware on their laptop through the internet:

  • Intel i5 8th Gen Processor or equivalent
  • 16 GB of RAM (with a minimum of 8 GB)
  • 100 GB HDD or more
  • HD Graphics
  • Webcam with a microphone
  • Wireless 802.11n/ac 5ghz capable
  • Windows Operating System (Windows 11)

Software

To ensure students are getting the most our of their classroom experience, some software will be required.

Lambton College has made this software easily accessible online. Students can leverage our Microsoft Office 365 software packages and services. In addition, much of the software you require for your courses will be available on demand for use on any device - on or off campus.
